EDGE And Thales Collaborate On MoU To Enhance Local Maintenance Of Advanced Optronic Systems

EDGE and Thales have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the 2025 Paris Airshow. This agreement aims to boost collaboration in producing and maintaining Thales' advanced electro-optic systems. The MoU aligns with both parties' dedication to enhancing the UAE's defence capabilities and localising key technologies through sustainable industrial solutions within the country.

The partnership will see EDGE's Electro-Optic Centre of Excellence (EOCE) and Thales working together to establish dedicated capabilities in the UAE. These capabilities will focus on Thales' optronic systems currently used by the UAE Armed Forces. The collaboration will cover several areas, including hand-held thermal imagers, weapon sights, and electro-optic vehicular cameras.

EDGE and Thales Sign MoU for Optronic Systems

The MoU outlines plans for maintaining Thales' SOPHIE family of thermal imagers, which are crucial for ground forces due to their superior detection abilities. Additionally, there will be local support for Thales' XTRAIM weapon sights. These sights combine red dot sighting with thermal imaging, offering a compact yet high-performance solution.

Electro-optic vehicular cameras are also part of the cooperation. These advanced optronics systems are designed to improve crew awareness and targeting capabilities across various armoured platforms. This initiative is expected to enhance operational readiness and lifecycle support for defence technologies used by the UAE Armed Forces.

The signing ceremony was attended by key figures from both organisations. Dr. Chaouki Kasmi from EDGE, Alexis Morel from Thales, and Abdelhafid Mordi from Thales in the UAE signed the MoU. Witnesses included Hamad Al Marar of EDGE, Patrice Caine of Thales Group, and Pascale Sourisse of Thales International.

Dr. Chaouki Kasmi expressed that this MoU is a significant step in strengthening local defence capabilities through industrial partnerships. "This MoU marks another important step in our journey to strengthen local defence capabilities through industrial partnerships," he stated.

Abdelhafid Mordi highlighted the importance of this collaboration in supporting the UAE's strategic vision for localised defence readiness. "We are proud to deepen our collaboration with EDGE and contribute to the UAE’s strategic vision for localised defence readiness," he said.

By combining their expertise, EDGE's EOCE and Thales aim to enhance operational readiness for advanced technologies used by the UAE Armed Forces. This partnership underscores their commitment to bolstering the local industrial ecosystem and reinforcing the UAE's leadership in global defence sectors.

This collaboration between EDGE and Thales signifies a pivotal development in advancing the UAE's defence technology landscape while ensuring sustained performance across multiple operational domains.
