EDGE Group Launches FADA To Strengthen UAE's Sovereign Space Capabilities And Innovation

EDGE, a prominent advanced technology and defence group, has unveiled its new space company, FADA. The name 'FADA' is inspired by the Arabic word for space. This initiative aims to enhance EDGE's global standing in space capabilities and expand its innovative product offerings. The group is dedicated to advancing the UAE's strategic interests in defence and technology through this venture.

FADA's mission focuses on developing sovereign space capabilities and indigenous technologies within the UAE. By leveraging both national and international partnerships, FADA seeks to create a self-reliant space sector that meets national and commercial needs. This approach ensures the UAE remains at the forefront of space innovation.

EDGE Group Unveils FADA for Space Innovation

The establishment of FADA aligns with the UAE's vision of becoming a leader in space technologies. It also supports the country's transition to a knowledge-based economy and broader economic diversification objectives. Hamad Al Marar, Managing Director and CEO of EDGE Group, stated that FADA represents a strategic leap towards technological excellence.

"The launch of FADA will enable EDGE to grow and fortify its position in the global space industry in line with the UAE’s vision of becoming a leader in space technologies, creating the blueprint for a self-sufficient and innovative ecosystem," said Al Marar. He added that this development signals broader ambitions to be a disruptor in this critical domain.

FADA will establish cutting-edge facilities for satellite systems' development, manufacturing, assembly, integration, and testing. These facilities will serve as a comprehensive hub for all space-related activities, offering end-to-end solutions to local and international clients. Services include Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), Optical (EO) payloads, Infrared (IR) payloads, satellite platforms, cybersecurity, and protection services.

Waleid Al Mesmari, President of Space & Cyber Technologies at EDGE, highlighted their commitment to pioneering advanced technologies through FADA. "With the launch of FADA, EDGE reinforces its commitment to pioneering advanced technologies and forging local and global partnerships," he said. This initiative aims to build a sustainable workforce focused on space advancements.

Partnerships and Future Plans

In November 2023, EDGE was chosen as the prime contractor in a strategic partnership with the UAE Space Agency for the 'Sirb' programme. This programme involves launching three synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites by 2026. Sirb is significant as it marks one of EDGE's initial ventures into the space sector.

The Sirb programme is set to launch its first satellite, Sirb-1, by 2026. It represents the first national capability-building programme led by a local industrial consortium comprising key players from the UAE's private space sector. The initiative plans to expand collaboration with other industry players, SMEs, and start-ups to enhance expertise further.

This announcement underscores EDGE's dedication to fostering local talent while establishing next-generation facilities for satellite system development. Through these efforts, EDGE aims to set new benchmarks in both national capabilities and global space landscapes.
