Eastern Region Partners With THE RIG To Launch Offshore Oil Platform-Inspired Tourism Hub
In a significant development on March 03, 2024, in Dammam, the Eastern Region's Governor, Prince Saud bin Naif bin Abdulaziz, presided over a landmark agreement signing between the Principality of Eastern Region and THE RIG, a subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund (PIF). This collaboration aims to spearhead the THERIG project, a pioneering initiative set to redefine marine activities and establish a unique tourism and entertainment hub.
The comprehensive investment agreement outlines plans for constructing, developing, operating, and maintaining a multifaceted tourist and visitor station. This ambitious project will feature a marina for yachts and seaplanes, helipads, and various support activities to enhance the project's offerings. Touted as the world's first tourist destination inspired by offshore oil platforms in the Arabian Gulf, THERIG promises to be a global novelty.

Strategically positioned in the Arabian Gulf near Al Juraid Island, the main offshore platform will be complemented by additional stations along Dammam Corniche, the Cultural Center, and Jubail Corniche. The project envisions incorporating hotels, amusement parks, water sports facilities, adventure activities, and essential visitor services. Notably, the platform is set to house three hotels and eleven restaurants, offering an unparalleled hospitality experience.
This groundbreaking project is expected to significantly boost entertainment, tourism, marine activities, and transportation options in the region. Furthermore, it aligns with Saudi Vision 2030's objectives of enhancing quality of life and fostering economic diversification. The Eastern Region has recently emerged as a magnet for substantial investment capital, leading in foreign investment attraction. This initiative follows a series of investment projects launched by the Governor of the Eastern Region, valued at SAR18 billion.
The THERIG project stands as a testament to Saudi Arabia's commitment to innovating its tourism and entertainment sectors. By leveraging its unique geographical and cultural assets, the Kingdom is poised to offer distinctive experiences that cater to global tourists' evolving preferences. This strategic move not only underscores Saudi Arabia's ambition to diversify its economy but also highlights its potential as a leading destination for international visitors.
