Earth Day Highlights The Role Of Culture And Arts In Promoting Sustainability In The UAE

Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qasimi, Minister of Culture, emphasised the significance of Earth Day on April 22. He described it as a global reminder of our planet's importance and a call for collective action towards sustainability. "In the UAE, this day holds special meaning, grounded in our firm belief that our responsibility toward the planet is an integral part of our identity and national values," he stated.

The UAE is increasingly focusing on integrating environmental awareness into various sectors, particularly through culture and arts. Sheikh Salem highlighted the Ministry of Culture's commitment to using culture and arts as tools for positive impact. This involves fostering environmental consciousness and promoting sustainable practices through artistic expression and cultural engagement.

Culture and Arts Promote Sustainability on Earth Day

The Ministry supports artists whose work addresses environmental issues, encouraging cultural content that highlights the importance of preserving natural resources. This initiative aims to instill environmental consciousness among younger generations. The Minister noted that these efforts are crucial for embedding environmental consciousness within cultural activities.

On the heritage front, Sheikh Salem stressed preserving traditional sustainable practices passed down from ancestors. These include using natural materials in construction, artisanal crafts, and traditional water irrigation methods. "Reviving and passing on these practices is crucial, not only as a testament to our national and cultural identity but also as viable solutions for modern-day sustainability challenges," he added.

The UAE National Pavilion's participation in the 18th International Architecture Exhibition at La Biennale di Venezia was highlighted by Sheikh Salem. The exhibition "Wetland," curated by Emirati architect Azza Aboualam, explores architecture's relationship with food production in arid climates. It presents an innovative vision blending tradition with modernity to address food and water security challenges.

This exhibition advocates community participation over centralised technological solutions. It reflects on the UAE’s food production landscape within a global context while exploring local design approaches developed over time in response to food scarcity. The project aligns with the UAE’s National Food Security Strategy aiming for high global rankings by 2051.

Commitment to Sustainability

Sheikh Salem concluded that the UAE’s participation in the Venice Biennale was more than showcasing architectural creativity; it affirmed their commitment to sustainability and food security. "It reflects our efforts to embed environmental awareness across all aspects of cultural work," he said. The exhibition highlights how UAE talent crafts innovative solutions rooted in national heritage using arts and creativity.
