EAD Issues Comprehensive Resolution On Soil Contamination Risk Management In Abu Dhabi
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has introduced a new resolution focused on managing and assessing soil pollution risks in Abu Dhabi. This decision outlines the steps for evaluating and handling soil pollution risks, ensuring environmentally responsible practices are followed. The resolution aligns with Law No.16 of 2005, which empowers EAD to issue regulations to control pollution and safeguard air, water, soil, and natural resources.
Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of EAD, emphasised that this resolution is part of enhancing legislative frameworks to protect Abu Dhabi's environment. She stated, "The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi will implement the requirements of the resolution in the emirate in coordination and cooperation with strategic partners and based on systematic and organised procedures that will contribute to achieving its desired goals."

The resolution applies to terrestrial protected areas and undeveloped sites in Abu Dhabi. It also covers polluted or exposed soils within the geographical scope of an environmental licence issued by EAD. The regulation specifies risk assessment procedures for soil pollution at these sites, following any required environmental impact assessments or studies.
In preparing this resolution, EAD collaborated with relevant authorities in Abu Dhabi. This collaboration adhered to the approved system for drafting legislation in the emirate. The goal was to ensure comprehensive coverage of all necessary aspects related to soil pollution management.
The resolution details rehabilitation procedures for contaminated sites and soils. It includes preparing and implementing mitigation or environmental action plans based on initial or detailed assessments. These steps aim to restore affected areas effectively while maintaining environmental integrity.
EAD's authority under Law No.16 allows it to issue such resolutions aimed at reducing pollution levels. This law ensures optimal use of natural resources while protecting human health and the environment from potential hazards.
Strategic Coordination for Effective Implementation
EAD plans to execute this resolution through strategic partnerships and organised processes. By doing so, it aims to achieve its objectives efficiently while preserving various environmental elements for future generations.
This initiative supports EAD's broader efforts to mitigate negative impacts from development, industrial activities, tourism, and more. By addressing these challenges proactively, EAD contributes significantly towards sustaining Abu Dhabi's environment.
Ultimately, this resolution represents a crucial step towards better environmental management practices in Abu Dhabi. Through careful planning and execution, it seeks not only immediate improvements but also long-term sustainability benefits for the region.
