EAD Partners With INPEX JODCO Foundation To Enhance Mangrove Research In Abu Dhabi
The Environment Agency–Abu Dhabi (EAD) and the INPEX JODCO Foundation have joined forces to advance research on mangroves in Abu Dhabi. This collaboration is part of the Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy and the Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative (ADMI). The partnership aims to explore carbon storage and sequestration rates in both natural and planted mangrove sites, contributing to global carbon mitigation efforts.
Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of EAD, and Hiroshi Fujii, Representative Director of the Foundation, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalise this collaboration. Dr. Al Dhaheri emphasised the importance of mangroves in combating climate change, stating, "Mangroves are vital allies in our fight against climate change, offering unparalleled coastal protection and exceptional carbon sequestration capabilities."

This partnership highlights EAD and the INPEX JODCO Foundation's dedication to environmental conservation. The research findings will aid global climate change efforts through innovative studies. Mangrove ecosystems are crucial for biodiversity, coastal resilience, and nature-based solutions that mitigate climate impacts.
Hiroshi Fujii expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, saying, "We are honoured to work in partnership with the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi to explore the carbon sequestration potential of mangroves, one of the UAE’s most valuable ecological assets." He emphasised their commitment to environmental conservation and uncovering new insights into preserving these habitats.
The ADMI is a comprehensive programme focused on restoring and researching mangrove and blue carbon ecosystems in Abu Dhabi. Launched in February 2022 during a meeting between H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Royal Highness Prince William at Jubail Mangrove Park, it aims to advance scientific restoration based on six principles: education, engagement, research, protection, partnership, and innovation.
The initiative encourages partnerships with governmental and non-governmental entities for environmental conservation. Locally, it collaborates with businesses and community organisations to highlight mangroves' role as nature-based solutions. To date, 15 local and eight international partners have joined this effort.
Strengthening International Ties
This initiative not only supports environmental goals but also strengthens relations between Japan and the UAE. It reflects EAD's ongoing commitment to enhancing social contributions within the UAE while aligning with international climate objectives.
EAD's broader mandate includes protecting natural ecosystems in Abu Dhabi by applying global technologies for environmental management. This research initiative further demonstrates Abu Dhabi's sustainability pledges while reinforcing its alignment with international climate goals.
The joint research project signifies a shared vision for a sustainable future between EAD and INPEX JODCO Foundation. Both organisations aim to expand environmental activities together by pushing scientific boundaries in understanding mangrove ecosystems' climatic benefits.
