EAD Delegation Engages With Dutch Experts On Climate Monitoring And AI Innovations
A delegation from the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD), the largest environmental regulator in the Middle East, recently completed a week-long tour of the Netherlands. This visit aimed to explore collaboration opportunities and discuss innovations in sustainability with stakeholders in Amsterdam and The Hague. The team also attended key events, including the World Summit AI, focusing on equitable and safe AI use.
From 7th to 14th October, the EAD delegation participated in various sustainability events. They met with government officials and industry leaders to exchange insights on decarbonisation and energy transition strategies, such as green hydrogen. Discussions also covered policy challenges for sectors that are difficult to decarbonise.

At the World Summit AI, EAD representatives engaged in discussions about AI's impact on humanity. Topics included AI's potential to disrupt industries and its ethical implications for governments and sustainability efforts. These conversations highlighted the importance of human-centric approaches in AI development.
The EAD team held a meeting with TNO, a Dutch research organisation focused on applying scientific knowledge practically. EAD uses advanced technology for air pollution monitoring, while TNO specialises in water purification technologies. These discussions provided insights that could enhance Abu Dhabi's Climate Change Strategy (2023-2027).
Additionally, EAD officials met with Rijkswaterstaat from the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. They compared air and water quality management practices between Abu Dhabi and Amsterdam. The focus was on developing resilience techniques for coastal areas relevant to both regions.
Insights from Deltares
The delegation also interacted with Deltares, a Dutch research institute specialising in water systems. They attended presentations on advanced models for water treatment and wastewater management. These models aim to optimise water usage and ensure safety, offering valuable insights for Abu Dhabi's environmental strategies.
Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of EAD, stated: "In line with our vision to shape a sustainable, safe, and healthy environment in Abu Dhabi and offer an enhanced quality of life to its residents, the visit of the EAD team to the Netherlands helps scale the Agency’s reach and scope. We continue to enhance environmental management and sustainability in Abu Dhabi while learning from the best practices of industry stakeholders regionally and globally."
By engaging with Dutch experts, EAD gained valuable insights into advanced technologies for water and air monitoring, waste management practices, and AI-driven innovations. Sharing their achievements bolstered Abu Dhabi’s reputation as an environmental hub.
This visit marks the first of several roadshows planned by EAD to stay informed about emerging technology solutions in this dynamic field. Such initiatives ensure future readiness by adopting best-in-class practices globally.
