EAD Delegation Engages With Tokyo Governor To Enhance Environmental Collaboration In Japan
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) is enhancing its global environmental partnerships through a strategic mission to Japan. Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of EAD, and the executive management team met with Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike. They explored collaboration opportunities in climate adaptation and sustainability, engaging with key public and private sector stakeholders.
Last year, Governor Koike visited Abu Dhabi's Falcon Hospital and Jubail Mangrove Park. She praised EAD's efforts in preserving the emirate’s mangrove ecosystem, strengthening UAE-Japan relations. This visit highlighted the importance of bilateral cooperation in environmental conservation.

A key focus of EAD’s visit was Japan’s digital transformation in government and its waste management systems. Japan is renowned for its innovative environmental practices, particularly in waste management and emission reduction. The Green Growth Strategy aims for carbon neutrality by 2050, showcasing Japan's commitment to sustainability.
The delegation was interested in Japan’s use of nature-based solutions (NbS) to mitigate natural disasters. These include restoring wetlands and mangroves to protect against waves, storm surges, and coastal hazards. Such practices are crucial for enhancing resilience against climate impacts.
EAD's delegation engaged in high-level discussions with experts in climate adaptation, water resources, and waste management. This tour is part of EAD’s ongoing effort to integrate global best practices for preserving Abu Dhabi’s environment and improving operations.
"Our visit to Japan proved highly productive, yielding profound insights from leading sustainability experts. We gained invaluable knowledge in waste reduction, climate mitigation, biotechnology advancements, and marine water conservation," stated Dr Shaikha Al Dhaheri.
