EAD Sets Benchmark In Middle East With Carbon Neutral Certification

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first environmental regulatory body in the Middle East to be awarded the Carbon Neutral Now Certification. This prestigious recognition comes from Applus+, a Spain-based independent party accredited by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The certification acknowledges organisations that have demonstrated a commitment to offsetting their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through various projects.

EAD has successfully provided evidence that its GHG emissions from 2020 to 2022 were offset according to the GHG Protocol Standards. This aligns with global climate change mitigation efforts aimed at reducing emissions. Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, highlighted the importance of this achievement in supporting global transitions towards cleaner technologies and adopting the best environmental practices to lower GHG emissions.

EAD Earns Carbon Neutral Certification

Dr. Al Dhaheri further explained that EAD voluntarily offset its headquarters' GHG emissions by 4355 tonnes of CO2e from 2020 to 2022, achieving carbon neutrality. This certification not only reflects EAD's commitment to climate change mitigation but also its dedication to promoting cleaner and greener methods. Plans are underway to expand carbon-neutral efforts through initiatives like mangrove restoration projects, solar power usage, electric vehicle adoption for commuting and site inspections, and the establishment of green procurement systems.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to support the UAE's Net Zero by 2050 target and contribute to national efforts towards carbon neutrality. EAD is also setting GHG emissions targets for specific sectors within the emirate of Abu Dhabi as part of the Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy, aiming to reduce the UAE's overall emissions.

The achievement by EAD sets a precedent for environmental regulatory bodies in the Middle East and underscores the importance of concerted efforts in combating climate change. By adopting innovative solutions and setting ambitious targets, EAD is leading by example in the quest for sustainability and environmental preservation.
