EAD Abu Dhabi Unveils 2023 Report: A Commitment To Environmental Protection And Climate Neutrality
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has recently unveiled its annual report for 2023, showcasing a year marked by significant strides in environmental conservation and sustainability. The document details the agency's comprehensive efforts to safeguard air, groundwater, marine water, and soil quality across the emirate. Furthermore, it sheds light on initiatives aimed at preserving the biodiversity of desert and marine ecosystems.
Under the leadership of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of EAD, the agency has underscored its pivotal role in championing sustainable development goals and asserting its position as a frontrunner in climate action globally. In 2023, EAD ramped up its environmental preservation endeavors to align with Abu Dhabi's swift progress, focusing on natural resource conservation, air quality standards enhancement, and ensuring a pristine environment for the generations to come.

One of the year's highlights includes the intensification of climate actions, with EAD reiterating its pledge to slash greenhouse gas emissions. This commitment is in sync with the UAE's ambitious target of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. A key milestone was the launch and execution of the Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy, aimed at bolstering the emirate's resilience against climate change impacts, attracting investments, and elevating residents' quality of life.
At COP28, hosted by the UAE, EAD took center stage to exhibit its environmental innovations and declare its involvement in initiatives dedicated to the conservation and protection of seagrass and mangroves. Mohammed Ahmed Al Bowardi, Vice Chairman of EAD's Board of Directors, lauded the agency's accomplishments achieved through strategic partnerships. He pointed out that groundbreaking projects initiated in 2023 were in line with EAD's corporate strategy, fostering comprehensive environmental protection and sustainable development.
Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Managing Director of EAD, emphasized the agency's significant contribution to COP28 and its dedication to fulfilling the UAE's climate neutrality objectives. She also celebrated the success of the Scimitar-horned Oryx reintroduction program in Chad, which has positively impacted the species' conservation status.
Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, highlighted several key achievements in 2023. Among them was the launch of a robust climate change strategy for Abu Dhabi designed to cut emissions, expand mangrove cultivation, and bolster the nation's success at COP28. Additionally, EAD implemented a policy against single-use plastics, eliminating millions of plastic bags and collecting substantial quantities of plastic bottles.
The inaugural Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Environmental Award was another significant initiative launched in 2023. This award honors individuals and institutions that demonstrate a strong commitment to environmental preservation. Thanks to these concerted efforts, there was an uptick in the sustainable fishing index and the discovery of new species of invertebrates and fish in Abu Dhabi waters.
In essence, EAD's annual report for 2023 paints a picture of unwavering dedication to environmental preservation in Abu Dhabi. It underscores the agency's commitment to achieving sustainable development and leading by example in global climate action efforts.
