E1 World Championship For Electric Powerboats Set To Return To Jeddah In January 2023

The E1 World Championship for electric powerboats is set to commence its opening round in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from January 24 to 25. This marks the second time the Kingdom will host this event at its waterfront. Organised by the Saudi Water Sports and Diving Federation, it operates under the Ministry of Sport's supervision and collaborates with the International Powerboating Federation.

Hosting this championship aligns with Saudi Arabia's commitment to protecting the Red Sea coastline and promoting a sustainable future for the region. This initiative is part of a broader national strategy aimed at safeguarding the Red Sea's ecosystem, fostering community empowerment, and advancing a sustainable blue economy. These efforts are in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, which seeks economic diversification.

The E1 Series CEO, Rodi Basso, highlighted that the championship was created in partnership with the Public Investment Fund. The goal is to preserve underwater biodiversity by transitioning marine transportation to electric power. Basso acknowledged that achieving these goals will take time but emphasised the importance of developing solutions for sustainable coastal areas.

The championship serves as a platform for companies and groups worldwide to collaborate on sustainability initiatives. It also supports Saudi Vision 2030 by promoting environmental sustainability, clean energy, and investment in various fields, including sports. The event aims to accelerate maritime sports growth in Saudi Arabia while enhancing economic and social development.

The Red Sea is one of Saudi Arabia's most biologically diverse regions and plays a crucial role in global trade routes. It connects the Indian Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea and covers an area of 186,000 square kilometres. The Red Sea features a coastline stretching 1,800 kilometres and boasts the world's fourth-largest coral reef ecosystem.

Nine international teams will compete in this year's championship, featuring prominent figures such as Will Smith, Marc Anthony, Steve Aoki, Rafael Nadal, Sergio Pérez, Tom Brady, Virat Kohli, Didier Drogba, and Marcelo Claure as team owners. These teams consist of 18 drivers who will participate in events across seven cities worldwide throughout the year.

Prominent Teams and Past Competitions

Last season's races took place in various cities like Venice, Monaco, Puerto Banús, Lake Como, and Jeddah. Team Brady emerged victorious after intense competition with Westbrook Racing. This victory highlights the competitive nature of the championship and its appeal among international participants.

By hosting this event again, Saudi Arabia aims to boost sustainability within maritime sports while increasing future events along its Red Sea coast. This initiative not only supports environmental goals but also contributes to economic diversification efforts outlined in Vision 2030.
