Dynamic Message Signs In Dubai Cut Travel Times By 20% And Improve Road Safety, RTA Reports

The Roads and Transport Authority states that Dynamic Message Signs now play a central role in traffic management across Dubai. The real-time sign network is credited with cutting journey times by up to 20% on major roads. The system also improves safety by warning drivers early about crashes, congestion, poor weather, and full road closures.

According to RTA, 112 electronic signs are currently in service on key corridors throughout the emirate. These units link to the advanced iTraffic platform at Dubai’s Intelligent Traffic Systems Center. Data from sensors and cameras feeds the platform, which supports Dubai’s wider smart city plans focused on safer and smoother mobility.

The DMS system does not operate in isolation, as it relies on several field data sources. Inputs include travel time monitoring systems, traffic volume counters, speed detectors, and weather stations across multiple routes. The iTraffic system analyses this information using artificial intelligence tools. It then proposes response scenarios that operators can apply or allow to run automatically.

The authority explains that automation is especially important during severe weather or reduced visibility. In conditions such as dense fog or heavy rainfall, the platform can deploy predefined plans without delay. These plans include speed warnings, closure notices, and route guidance messages. The aim is to manage risk proactively and support safe driving behaviour for all road users.

Commenting on how the system protects drivers, Salah Al Marzouqi, Director of Intelligent Traffic Systems at RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, said, "The system significantly enhances road safety by generating sequential messages based on the location of an incident. It automatically creates consecutive alert zones at different distances—starting 2 kilometres before the incident site, followed by a congestion zone, and finally a guidance zone further away with lighter traffic—to redirect vehicles away from the accident site and reduce the risk of secondary collisions."

Al Marzouqi added that Dynamic Message Signs act as a primary communication channel between RTA and motorists. The signs broadcast alerts about crashes, congestion, and vehicle breakdowns, and they guide diversions during planned or urgent closures. They are also used to support awareness campaigns on road safety themes, in line with wider transport strategies.

Al Marzouqi further noted, "During the first half of 2025, a total of 17,819 messages were displayed through the DMS system. Accident-related messages topped the list with 12,283, followed by 1,038 warning messages, 984 congestion alerts, and 905 breakdown notifications. Additionally, 90 messages were issued for full road closures, along with 2,519 other alerts covering weather conditions, roadworks, and more. These figures highlight the system’s pivotal role in effectively responding to diverse operational scenarios."

Alongside incident alerts, part of the network is dedicated to travel time information. The RTA has assigned 22 signs to show estimated times to important destinations. These include Dubai International Airport, Dubai Marina, and other high-demand areas. Figures refresh automatically around the clock, giving drivers more confidence when selecting routes and departure times.

The authority stresses that the system’s development reflects a broader commitment to modern global transport technologies. Officials highlight that the integrated approach, combining roadside hardware, sensors, and the iTraffic platform, is now embedded in Dubai’s transport planning. By providing clear and timely information, the DMS system supports smoother mobility and reduces secondary incidents. The network therefore remains a key digital tool as Dubai advances its smart city and road safety objectives.
