Dubai’s 'Dr Knee' Leads Malawi's First Surgery Camp To Transform Orthopedic Care
Dubai is emerging as a vital hub for cross-border medical initiatives, highlighted by UAE-based orthopedic specialist Dr. Azam Badar Khan, known as "Dr Knee". In January 2026, he will lead Malawi's inaugural knee surgery camp. This milestone aims to transform orthopedic care in one of the world's least developed countries.
The forthcoming camp, scheduled from January 19 to 24 at LMJ Hospital Limbe in Blantyre and LSF Hospital in Lilongwe, will offer advanced surgeries like total knee replacements and arthroscopic procedures. This initiative could significantly reduce knee disorder-related disabilities and establish a sustainable treatment model for neighbouring regions.

Expanding Global Medical Collaborations
Dubai's role as a global healthcare collaboration base is growing. The city serves as a link between Asia and Africa, especially in medical partnerships. This trend aligns with the UAE's National Day celebrations, focusing on international medical diplomacy and knowledge-sharing. Dr Knee emphasizes that "Dubai has given us the platform, infrastructure and reach to scale a movement that started with one mission: helping people walk pain-free for longer."
During the announcement, Dr Knee stated, "Malawi doesn't just have a medical gap – it has decades of unaddressed knee disease." He noted the overwhelming need and potential for change, highlighting the camp's aim to provide life-altering surgeries for patients who have awaited proper treatment for years, while laying a foundation for lasting orthopedic care.
Addressing a Silent Epidemic
In December 2024, Dr Knee assessed over 400 patients in Blantyre and Lilongwe, Malawi's capital. He identified untreated knee conditions, ranging from severe osteoarthritis to long-neglected injuries, highlighting "a silent epidemic of mobility loss" in underserved African areas. Malawi, with over 21 million people, lacks dedicated knee surgeons and adequate orthopedic facilities.
Dr Knee's work in Malawi is not an isolated effort. His team is in talks with Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Uganda for long-term partnerships. These collaborations aim to include specialist training, joint-health education, and early-diagnosis programs, all part of a broader mobility mission expanding across India and the UAE. Dr Knee's "Walk Again with Dr Knee" campaign will debut in Dubai in February 2026.
Long-Term Orthopedic Vision
The January camp in Malawi is expected to leave a lasting impact on the country's orthopedic sector. It will provide vital surgeries and equip local medical teams with new skills, paving the way for future specialist clinics. Dr Knee said, "We are building an interconnected network of mobility care across the Middle East, Asia and Africa," emphasizing the cumulative strength of their efforts across countries to maintain mobility and independence.
Regional health officials in Malawi view this camp as a potential turning point for orthopedic care. It aims to transfer essential skills to local teams and lay the groundwork for future clinics, reinforcing Dubai's influence in regional healthcare collaborations. Dr Knee's mission is to help African communities achieve long-term mobility and independence.
