Dubai Taxi Achieves 8% Increase In Trips, Signalling Strong Public Transport Growth

Dubai's taxi industry has marked a significant milestone in 2023, achieving an impressive annual growth that underscores its pivotal role in the city's public transport system. With about 114 million trips completed, ferrying approximately 198.4 million passengers, the sector has recorded its highest trip count in the last 15 years. This achievement reflects the sector's robust expansion and its critical contribution to facilitating mobility across Dubai.

Adel Shakri, Director of Planning and Business Development at the Public Transport Agency, Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), highlighted the sector's remarkable performance. "The annual growth rate in taxi trips from 2022 to 2023 was as much as 8 percent," Shakri noted, emphasizing the sector's integral role in Dubai's comprehensive public transport network. October 2023 stood out with taxi trips reaching a peak of 10 million, showcasing an unprecedented surge in demand.

Dubai Taxi Trips Up by 8% in 2023

Shakri expressed his satisfaction with this significant growth, attributing it to the deep trust that residents, tourists, and visitors place in the taxi services overseen by the RTA. To accommodate this increasing demand, the RTA deployed an additional 1,160 taxis in 2023, expanding the fleet to approximately 12,532 vehicles. Notably, a substantial portion of this fleet, comprising 10,388 taxis or 83 percent, consists of environmentally friendly hybrid and electric vehicles. These taxis are manned by around 27,900 drivers working across two shifts to ensure seamless service round the clock.

The e-hail taxi service (Hala Taxi) also witnessed a remarkable uptick in usage with 39.8 million trips made in 2023. This represents a 27% increase from the previous year, highlighting a significant shift in consumer behavior from traditional street hails to electronic bookings. The efficiency of Hala's service has seen considerable improvement as well, with the average Actual Arrival Time for electronically booked taxis reaching customers in Dubai dropping to just 3.6 minutes in 2023 from 3.9 minutes in 2022.

This growth not only reflects the increasing reliance on Dubai's taxi services but also points to the RTA's successful efforts in enhancing operational efficiency and customer satisfaction. The expansion of the environmentally friendly fleet further demonstrates Dubai's commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions in its public transport sector.

Overall, the substantial growth in Dubai's taxi sector throughout 2023 highlights its vital role in supporting the city's public transport network and its commitment to innovation and sustainability. With continued investments and improvements, Dubai's taxi services are set to remain a key component of the city's transport infrastructure, offering efficient, reliable, and eco-friendly transportation solutions to residents and visitors alike.
