Dubai Supreme Council Of Energy Evaluates Progress On Net-Zero Goals And Carbon Emissions Reduction

H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE), led the 84th virtual meeting of the Council. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of DSCE, was also present. The meeting focused on reviewing the annual carbon emissions inventory, which showed a 29% reduction. This progress aligns with Dubai's strategy to cut carbon emissions by 30% by 2030.

Dubai remains at the forefront globally in managing emissions through various programmes and projects. These initiatives are implemented by entities under the Council such as Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), Dubai Municipality, Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), ENOC Group, Dubai Petroleum, and the Road and Transport Authority (RTA).

Dubai Reviews Net-Zero Efforts and Emissions

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer highlighted that under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, future carbon emissions have been evaluated with relevant entities in Dubai. This evaluation aims to identify necessary steps for emission mitigation and to create a roadmap towards achieving net zero by 2050.

The Council is dedicated to establishing a robust regulatory framework to ensure ongoing project success. Over the past decade, projects in solar energy, water and electricity conservation, green mobility, and operational efficiency in factories have significantly contributed to annual emission reductions.

During the meeting, a programme was approved to involve the private sector in developing electric vehicle charging stations. This initiative aims to support infrastructure growth and increase charging stations across Dubai.

Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi, Secretary-General of the Council, explained that since 2013, Dubai has been collecting carbon emissions data and comparing it with annual reduction targets. Implementation phases are reviewed using performance indicators to ensure these targets are met annually.

Key Participants

The meeting included board members such as Dawood Al Hajri from Dubai Municipality; Abdulla bin Kalban from Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA); Saif Humaid Al Falasi from ENOC; Juan-Pablo Freile from Dubai Petroleum; and Muna Al Osaimi from RTA's Strategy and Corporate Governance Sector.

The Council's commitment to reducing carbon emissions reflects its dedication to sustainable development goals. By involving both public and private sectors in these efforts, Dubai continues to lead in environmental sustainability initiatives.
