Dubai's RTA Completes Preventive Sidewalk Maintenance Spanning 80,000 Sqm In 2023
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has recently completed a significant sidewalk maintenance project as part of its Preventive Maintenance Plan 2023. This extensive initiative covered over 80,000 square metres across various sectors of the emirate, including residential, tourist, commercial, economic, and coastal areas. The maintenance addressed a range of pedestrian pathways, crosswalks, service roads, and combined-use tracks for both pedestrians and cyclists. Special attention was given to repairing sidewalks affected by subsidence, erosion, damage, or tile loss due to misuse or environmental factors.
Eng. Hussein Al-Banna, CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency at RTA, highlighted the project's role in reinforcing the durability, safety, and sustainability of street assets while preserving the city's aesthetic appeal. He emphasized that such maintenance works are crucial for enhancing pedestrian safety to meet global standards, aligning with RTA's vision to lead in seamless and sustainable mobility. The use of advanced maintenance technologies was also noted as a key strategy in managing and monitoring the infrastructure effectively.

The project is seen as a step towards ensuring the structural integrity of road assets and prioritizing the safety of road users amidst Dubai's rapid urban growth. Eng. Al-Banna further stated RTA's commitment to expanding its preventive maintenance efforts for sidewalks by at least 10 percent in 2024 compared to 2023. This expansion will include areas such as Al Wuheida, Al Khabisi, Al Twar 2, Al Sufouh 1, 2nd December Street, along with cycling tracks on Jumeirah Street and others. Maintenance will also extend to sidewalks on Al Rigga and Al Muraqabat roads, cycling tracks in Dubai Marina, intersections along Jumeirah Street, and service sidewalks on Sheikh Zayed Road.
RTA remains dedicated to implementing necessary safety measures during sidewalk maintenance and rehabilitation works to ensure the uninterrupted and safe movement of pedestrians throughout Dubai. This initiative not only aims at improving the city's infrastructure but also at enhancing the well-being of both residents and visitors by providing safer and more sustainable mobility options.
