Dubai RTA Unveils New Tunnel To Improve Traffic Flow And Cut Travel Time To 3.8 Minutes

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has inaugurated a new 800-metre tunnel on Umm Suqeim Street. This tunnel, featuring four lanes in each direction, aims to enhance traffic flow significantly. It is a crucial element of the Umm Suqeim Street Development Project, which extends from Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

The upgraded road network is set to benefit over one million residents in key communities like Al Barsha South 1, 2, and 3, Dubai Hills, Arjan, and Dubai Science Park. The project improves connectivity between major corridors such as Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road.

New Tunnel Opens in Dubai to Ease Traffic

According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, "The project enhances connectivity between four strategic corridors in Dubai: Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road. It increases the capacity of Umm Suqeim Street to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, improves traffic flow, and reduces travel time between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road by 61% from 9.7 minutes to 3.8 minutes."

Incorporating advanced smart technologies was a significant aspect of this project. Drones equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) were utilised for real-time data collection and analysis during construction. This approach improved decision-making processes and increased site efficiency while reducing field survey time by 60%.

"Additionally, time-lapse imaging was employed to continuously track construction progress, increasing monitoring efficiency by 40%," said Al Tayer. These technological advancements have played a vital role in ensuring the project's success.

This development builds upon earlier phases of the project. In 2013, RTA completed Phase I from Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Khail Road. This phase included constructing two bridges with three lanes each way—one crossing the eastern street parallel to Al Asayel Street and another crossing the western street parallel to First Al Khail Road.

Previous Infrastructure Enhancements

The initial phase also saw the development of two signalised intersections at Umm Suqeim Street's junctions with Al Asayel Street and First Al Khail Road. Additionally, three pedestrian bridges were constructed along Umm Suqeim Street for safe crossings between Al Quoz and Al Barsha areas.

In 2020, RTA completed a 500-metre bridge at Umm Suqeim Street's intersection with the entrance to Dubai Hills and Al Barsha South as part of infrastructure upgrades for Dubai Hills Mall. This bridge features four lanes each way and can accommodate up to 16,000 vehicles per hour—matching the capacity of the newly opened tunnel.

The recent developments on Umm Suqeim Street are expected to significantly improve traffic conditions in Dubai. By enhancing connectivity between major roads and increasing vehicle capacity on key routes, these projects aim to provide smoother commutes for residents across several communities.
