Dubai To Enhance Public Transport With Dedicated Bus And Taxi Lanes
In a significant move to enhance Dubai's public transport infrastructure, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has approved a comprehensive plan to introduce dedicated lanes for buses and taxis stretching over 13.1 km across six major streets. This initiative encompasses Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah 2nd of December, Al Satwa, Al Nahda, Omar bin Al Khattab, and Naif Streets. With an anticipated completion timeline between 2025 and 2027, this project will expand Dubai's network of exclusive bus lanes to a total of 20.1 km.
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Directors, RTA, highlighted the strategic importance of this development. He emphasized that dedicated lanes for buses and taxis align with global best practices in transportation, aimed at motivating the community to opt for public transport over private vehicles. According to Al Tayer, the primary objectives of this initiative include reducing travel times, ensuring punctuality of bus services, boosting public transport usage, and enhancing taxi service efficiency. Moreover, the project is expected to lower operational costs, promote integration among various transport modes, and contribute to emission reduction.
Al Tayer shared optimistic projections regarding the impact of the dedicated bus lanes on reducing travel times and improving service punctuality. The initiative is expected to cut bus travel times by 24% to 59% during peak hours and enhance on-time arrivals by 28% to 56%. The most significant improvements are anticipated on Naif Street and Al Satwa Road, with travel times expected to reduce by 59% and 54%, respectively. Moreover, the project is projected to increase public transport patronage by up to 30% on certain roads, while simultaneously reducing the number of buses required to service these routes.
The extension of the dedicated lanes is a continuation of RTA's successful efforts in this domain, which have previously led to a notable reduction in bus trip times by an average of 5 minutes per trip. This has not only improved the efficiency of public transport but also significantly enhanced satisfaction levels among both passengers and drivers of buses and taxis.
Previous Achievements and Future Prospects
Prior to this expansion, RTA had already implemented dedicated bus lanes extending 7 km, including a combined bus and taxi lane that covered 4.3 km on Khalid Bin Al Waleed Road. Additional dedicated stretches were established along sections of Naif Street, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah Street, and Al Ghubaiba Road. These earlier phases have set a solid foundation for the forthcoming expansions, promising a more integrated, efficient, and user-friendly public transport system in Dubai.
The RTA's commitment to enhancing the public transport infrastructure through the addition of dedicated bus and taxi lanes is a testament to Dubai's proactive approach to urban mobility challenges. This initiative not only aims to improve the daily commute of residents and visitors but also supports the broader strategic goals of fostering well-being and happiness among public transport users. As the project progresses towards its completion in the coming years, it is set to significantly contribute to Dubai's vision of a sustainable, efficient, and integrated transportation ecosystem.
