RTA Dubai Hosts Innovation Labs On Mobility, Traffic Safety, And AI In 2023

In a significant stride towards enhancing Dubai's transport and mobility landscape, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) conducted five innovation labs in the latter half of 2023. These sessions were held at the Mobility Research and Innovation Centre, University of Birmingham in Dubai, covering a broad spectrum of RTA's operational sectors including Traffic and Roads Agency, Rail Agency, Corporate Administrative Support Services sector, Public Transport Agency, and the Corporate Technology Support Services Sector.

Under the guidance of Fatima Al Mandoos, Director of Innovation and Pioneering at RTA's Strategy and Corporate Governance Sector, the labs delved into critical areas. The Traffic and Roads Agency lab focused on the pivotal role of enhancing traffic safety for motorcycle delivery services, bicycle and e-scooter users, and pedestrians. Meanwhile, the Rail Agency Lab explored the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in providing proactive services to users, sustaining assets, and boosting operational efficiencies. Discussions also covered improvements in metro station services and sustainable transportation through advanced technologies.

RTA's 2023 Labs: Mobility and AI Focus

The Corporate Administrative Support Services Sector lab highlighted RTA's commitment to a circular economy. Initiatives such as recycling paper waste and plastic cards, installing green chargers to cut down carbon dioxide emissions, and applying the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) system across all RTA buildings were showcased. Additionally, the lab presented RTA's efforts in extending product lifespan through the Dubai Metro maintenance system, employing 3D printing in product design, and recycling aluminium licence plate numbers.

Finding Solutions

An interactive brainstorming session by the Public Transport Agency lab sought solutions to challenges like adhering to bus schedules and school bus timings, fine collection, and asset management. Solutions proposed included time management based on occupancy levels for buses, expediting ticket validation, improving data exchange with partners, enhancing demand management, improving governance for school buses, scheduling integration between RTA and operators, employing technology for continuous asset monitoring, and ensuring employee adherence to safety systems.

nol Card Improvement

The Corporate Technology Support Services Sector lab aimed at fostering innovation for nol card services. The goal is to position nol card as a frontrunner in ticketing, payments, and digital banking features through Fintech innovations.

These innovation labs represent RTA's ongoing commitment to leveraging technology and innovative solutions to enhance Dubai's transport systems. Through these collaborative efforts, RTA aims to address current challenges while paving the way for a more efficient and sustainable mobility future.
