Dubai's RTA Advances Urban Connectivity With Al Khaleej Street Tunnel Project
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has recently secured a contract for the construction of the Al Khaleej Street Tunnel Project, a significant component of the Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project. This ambitious tunnel, spanning 1,650 meters with six lanes, is designed to support up to 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. The initiative aims to enhance the Al Shindagha area's infrastructure, aligning with Dubai's rapid population growth and urban expansion.
The Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project stretches over 13 kilometers, covering Sheikh Rashid Road, Al Mina Street, Al Khaleej Street, and Cairo Street. It encompasses the upgrade of 15 intersections and is set to benefit residential and developmental communities such as Dubai Islands, Dubai Waterfront, Dubai Maritime City, and Mina Rashid. Serving around one million people, the project's goal is to slash travel times from 104 minutes to a mere 16 minutes by 2030.
As part of Phase 4 of this extensive project, the Al Khaleej Street Tunnel will facilitate three lanes in each direction, ensuring smooth traffic flow from the Infinity Bridge towards Deira and vice versa. This phase also includes converting the Cairo and Al Wuheida Streets crossing from a roundabout into a signalized intersection, enhancing Cairo Street, and linking Dubai Islands to the new tunnel on Al Khaleej Street northward. The improvements are anticipated to benefit residents of Abu Hail, Al Wuheida, and Al Mamzar, along with development projects like Dubai Islands and Hamriya Port.
In addition to the tunnel project, the RTA is undertaking a 4.8-kilometer enhancement on Sheikh Rashid Street. This includes constructing three bridges and a roadway of the same length, aiming to improve traffic flow and upgrade surface junctions along Jumeirah Street and others. The project also features two pedestrian bridges and infrastructure works such as street lighting and traffic systems.
The RTA has made significant progress within the Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project. Notable completions include the Wafi Intersection and the intersection of Sheikh Rashid Road with Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street. Additionally, five bridges leading to Dubai Islands have been opened, alongside the completion of the Infinity Bridge and Falcon Intersection Improvement Project.
These developments underscore the Dubai government's commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure in response to the city's growing population and urbanization needs, particularly in the Al Shindagha area.
