Dubai Rains: What Roads Are Closed And Where Is Traffic Diverted?

Following an unparalleled amount of rainfall in the UAE, Dubai's infrastructure has been significantly challenged, with substantial water accumulation on the city's roads. This historic weather event prompted the RTA to issue advisories and implement measures to mitigate the impact on traffic and ensure public safety. Read on to know the traffic update.

Traffic Update

The RTA has been actively updating the public through its X (formerly known as Twitter) account, highlighting efforts to keep the city moving despite the adverse conditions. Key roads such as Airport Road, Al Nahda Street, and the intersection of Al Khawaneej Street and Algeria Street are now reported to have traffic flowing once more. These efforts are part of a broader initiative to manage the water on many of Dubai's busiest roads and maintain mobility where feasible.

Government's Response

This weather anomaly prompted the UAE National Centre for Meteorology to issue a red weather warning on Tuesday, April 16, signalling the need for heightened vigilance due to convective clouds. Such meteorological conditions increase the likelihood of torrential rainfall, lightning, thunder, and potentially hail across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah, and Fujairah until 6 pm on Wednesday, April 17. The red warning represents the most severe alert level in the Centre's colour-coded system.

In response to the severe weather warning, the Government of Dubai has taken decisive actions to protect its citizens and residents. It encouraged the private sector to adopt work-from-home arrangements for Wednesday, April 17. Additionally, government employees were advised to remain at home for a second day in a row. Educational institutions, including private schools, nurseries, and universities in Dubai, were directed to close and shift to distance learning for the day, as instructed by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA).

Continued Efforts

As the RTA and other government entities strive to address the aftermath and restore normalcy, the public's cooperation with these measures is crucial. The situation remains dynamic, with teams on the ground working tirelessly to resolve traffic disruptions and ensure the safety of all residents. For the latest updates and advisories, residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels.

The collective efforts of Dubai's authorities highlight the city's resilience and preparedness in facing natural challenges, underscoring a commitment to public safety and infrastructure stability amid unforeseen weather events.
