DUBAI REEF Phase One Deployment Plan Launched To Enhance Marine Biodiversity In Dubai
H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, recently attended the launch of DUBAI REEF's initial deployment phase. This event marked the completion of 1,000 reef modules and took place during the Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix at Mina Rashid. The ceremony was attended by prominent figures including Abdulla Mohammed Al Basti and Helal Saeed Almarri.
DUBAI REEF is a sustainable initiative under Dubai Can, aiming to create the world's largest single purpose-built reef development. The project, announced at COP28 in December 2023, began its pilot stage in April 2024. Over three years, 20,000 reef modules will be deployed across a 600 square kilometre area with ongoing scientific monitoring.
The project is supported by key partners such as the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), DP World, and Nakheel. National Ready Mix Concrete Co. provides concrete for module fabrication, while Strategy& offers advisory services. DUBAI REEF aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and supports the UAE’s Green Agenda - 2030.
H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum highlighted the project's significance: "The DUBAI REEF project hits a key milestone today with the beginning of the first 1,000 purpose-built modules’ deployment into the city’s waters." He emphasised Emirates' commitment to preserving natural ecosystems for future generations.
The initiative aims to enhance marine biodiversity, support fish populations, and increase ecosystem resilience. It involves collaboration between government departments, universities, companies, local fishermen, students, and communities. The project also aligns with Dubai's Year of Sustainability extended through 2024.
Helal Saeed Almarri stated that DUBAI REEF reflects innovative solutions that align ecological preservation with economic growth. He noted that it serves as a replicable framework for other global destinations to contribute to both economic vitality and planetary health.
Module Fabrication and Deployment
The fabrication of reef modules began in August 2024 by HaejooX. Modules like 'Reef Shade' and 'Arab Marine Pyramid' are made from sustainable materials ensuring durability over 100 years. These structures promote marine life by creating habitats for various species at different depths in Dubai's waters.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem expressed pride in DUBAI REEF’s role in advancing environmental sustainability: "We are proud of DUBAI REEF’s role in advancing the maritime sector and enhancing environmental sustainability in Dubai."
Public Engagement and Future Plans
DUBAI REEF plans community engagement programmes to raise awareness about its benefits for local communities and future generations. Public volunteering opportunities will allow individuals to contribute to securing a sustainable future for Dubai.
Abdul Aziz Abdulla Al Ghurair commented on public-private collaboration: "The launch of the first phase of the Dubai Reef project embodies Dubai’s commitment to pioneering sustainability initiatives that benefit both the environment and the economic landscape."
The project's long-term objectives include encouraging environmental stewardship, contributing to marine conservation research, strengthening socio-economic prosperity, eco-tourism, and preserving marine heritage. Strategic investments aim to leave a lasting legacy for protecting marine life.
