No Surprise! Dubai Excels In Global Expat Index Ranking

Dubai has once again demonstrated its allure as a leading destination for expatriates, securing the ninth position in the newly released Global Expat Index. With a score of 6.80, the emirate surpasses well-known cities like Toronto, Sydney, and Lisbon. This ranking highlights Dubai's appeal as a top city for both work and living on a global scale.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi: Preferred Cities for Expats

In addition to its global standing, Dubai has been recognised as the third most preferred city in Asia for expatriates planning to relocate in 2024, achieving a score of 6.81. Close behind, Abu Dhabi earned the eighth spot with a score of 6.09, according to the index. These findings, derived from a report by Preply, an online language learning marketplace, underline the UAE's strong position as a destination for international talent.

The report sheds light on Dubai's reputation for a luxurious lifestyle, albeit with a high cost of living, estimated at $3,787 per month. However, the emirate boasts the second highest average tax-free salary among all Asian cities, standing at $3,894. This, coupled with the UAE's tax laws which exempt income tax, offers significant financial benefits to those earning over $64,000 annually.

Safety is another area where Dubai excels, securing a high safety score of 83.40 and ranking as the third safest city in the index. In comparison, Abu Dhabi also presents a compelling case for expatriates with an average cost of living at $3,501 and an average tax-free salary of $3,597. The UAE capital outperforms in terms of safety within Asia, boasting the highest score of 86.71.

Global Rankings and the Appeal of the UAE

At the top of the Global Expat Index, Tallinn, Estonia, emerged as the best city for work and living, with the highest overall expat score of 7.35 out of 10. Bern, Switzerland, and Singapore closely followed, with the latter leading the Asia index as the ideal city for expatriates looking to relocate in 2024.

Dubai's increasing popularity among expatriate workers and corporates has been notable, especially following the adoption of hybrid work cultures post-pandemic. The introduction of Dubai's digital nomad visa scheme in March 2021 positioned the emirate as a pioneer in the Gulf region, catering to the rising demand for flexible work environments. This initiative has notably propelled Dubai to the forefront of remote working destinations worldwide.

The allure of Dubai extends to its emerging fintech and financial services sectors, attracting a diverse talent pool. With its competitive tax environment and business-friendly common law system, Dubai has emerged as a leading financial center attracting multinational firms and capital flows.

Simultaneously, Abu Dhabi is experiencing a real estate boom driven by the influx of digital nomads and expatriates, which has significantly boosted property transactions in the UAE capital.
