Reckless Driving: Dubai Police Confiscates Over 4,000 Scooters And Bicycles In First Half Of 2024
In the first half of 2024, accidents involving e-scooters, bicycles, and electric bikes led to four deaths, one severe injury, 19 moderate injuries, and five minor injuries. Additionally, 7804 violations were recorded, and 4474 scooters and bicycles were confiscated.
Major General Abdullah Ali Al Ghaithi, Assistant Commandant for Operations Affairs at Dubai Police, stressed the force's dedication to improving traffic awareness and fostering a culture of safety among road users. This initiative aims to prevent traffic accidents and fatalities, ensuring maximum safety for everyone.
Al Ghaithi mentioned that Dubai Police is committed to boosting road safety through increased traffic control operations. "These operations target traffic violations and reckless drivers, contributing to safer roads and fewer fatalities," he stated.
He pointed out the significant dangers posed by e-scooters, bicycles, and electric bikes, especially when used in unauthorised areas or on public roads. "Dubai Police prioritises the safety of riders and other road users through regular awareness campaigns," he reaffirmed.
Penalties for Violations
Al Ghaithi outlined various fines for violations. These include riding on roads with a speed limit exceeding 60 km/h, riding dangerously, carrying passengers on e-scooters, and riding against traffic. He emphasised the importance of adhering to safety measures such as using designated lanes and wearing appropriate clothing and helmets.
He also advised avoiding riding at night or in adverse weather conditions. Al Ghaithi urged cyclists to follow traffic rules and regulations, use designated paths, and prioritise safety.
The public is encouraged to report any negative phenomena or dangerous behaviours through the "Police Eye" service or by calling the "We Are All Police" service at 901. This initiative aims to involve the community in maintaining road safety.
