Sheikha Latifa Launches Dubai Photography Museum To Enhance Cultural Tourism And Showcase Global Talent
Under the guidance of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai is set to launch the Dubai Photography Museum. This initiative, led by H.H. Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, aims to enrich Dubai's museum sector by documenting photography's history both regionally and globally. The museum will feature diverse exhibits and collections.
The museum will offer interactive spaces designed to engage visitors while celebrating local and international photography talent. It aims to position Dubai as a global cultural hub, fostering creativity and nurturing talent. Sheikha Latifa emphasised Dubai's commitment to global leadership through innovative projects.

Sheikha Latifa stated, "The Dubai Photography Museum is a remarkable milestone that reinforces the emirate’s position as a global hub for talent and a premier destination for photographers worldwide. It serves as a platform for exchanging knowledge and expertise with leading cultural institutions, embodying our commitment to innovation and fostering meaningful dialogue through arts and culture while also reflecting Dubai’s rich cultural diversity, offering visitors unique educational experiences and preserving the collective memory of photography as part of our shared human heritage."
This project aligns with the Dubai Urban Master Plan 2040 and the cultural priorities of Dubai Plan 2030. It supports Dubai Culture’s mission to safeguard tangible and intangible cultural heritage. The museum will promote visual documentation of the city's narrative on both local and global scales.
A collaboration between Dubai Culture and the private sector, this museum aims to strengthen Dubai's status as a global hub for visual arts. It will provide support for artists to transform their visions into impactful projects with economic value, showcased through permanent and temporary exhibitions.
The museum will play a crucial role in promoting cultural tourism in Dubai. It will attract leading cultural institutions in photography, encouraging them to establish a presence within its facilities. This will enhance collaboration with local cultural bodies.
Global Architectural Competition
Dubai Culture plans to launch an international architectural competition next year for designing the new museum. The competition offers a prize of AED1 million, inviting architects and designers worldwide to present their visions for the museum's design.
The museum's design will include spaces for permanent exhibitions highlighting photography's history, styles, techniques, various genres, interactive children's areas, historical retrospectives, and multimedia projects.
Supporting Creative Industries
This initiative comes at a time when the global photography market is projected to reach $62.4 billion by 2027. Museums are known to stimulate job creation in related industries worldwide, employing over 1.5 million people.
The operational spaces of the museum will include lecture halls, event areas, workshop spaces, photography labs, restoration labs, a library archive, retail outlets, and food facilities.
The museum aims to preserve the region’s visual memory while serving as an international hub for photography. It will bring together photographers from around the world for knowledge exchange and offer educational resources for youth and enthusiasts.
