Dubai Museum Of Art (DUMA) Unveiled By Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid As New Cultural Landmark
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, attended the unveiling of the Dubai Museum of Art (DUMA). This project, developed by the Al-Futtaim Group, aims to become a new architectural and cultural landmark. His Highness reviewed the museum’s unique designs by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando.
The museum's design combines traditional local culture with modern architecture. It highlights symbolic meaning, human-centred dimensions, and dynamic purpose. The structure appeals to artists and art lovers, offering a sensory experience beyond physical space. Rising five stories above water, it features adaptable exhibition galleries on the first two floors.
Omar Al Futtaim, Vice Chairman and CEO of Al-Futtaim Group, expressed pride in contributing to this cultural creation. He stated: "It is an honour to be part of this exceptional cultural creation, which embodies the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to position Dubai as a global hub for culture and creativity." The museum reflects Dubai's openness to creativity and its role in connecting cultures globally.
The museum will host artist talks, panel discussions, educational programmes, and art fairs. Purpose-built event spaces and a VIP lounge will support a curated calendar of cultural activities that encourage learning and creative innovation. The design by Tadao Ando embodies a serene dialogue between nature, water, and human spirit.
The architecture draws inspiration from the sea and pearls, symbols of Dubai’s heritage. Its curved shell encloses a circular exhibition hall representing unity and discovery. A central cylindrical opening allows natural light to cascade through the structure like a pearl's shimmer.
DUMA will serve as a global platform for both emerging and established artists. It aims to inspire visitors worldwide with artistic experiences that strengthen cultural ties. The museum’s collection will showcase diverse modern and contemporary art reflecting Dubai’s spirit.
Educational Initiatives
To enhance its educational impact, DUMA will include a library and study rooms alongside world-class training programmes. These initiatives aim to nurture future generations of creative leaders. The museum’s exhibitions will link modern art with global dialogue using art as a catalyst for empathy and social transformation.
Tadao Ando designed DUMA with his signature minimalist style that harmonises architecture with nature through light use. Known for projects like Japan’s Chichu Art Museum and Paris’ Bourse de Commerce, Ando received numerous accolades including the 1995 Pritzker Architecture Prize.
The launch event was attended by several dignitaries including H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum; H.H. Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum; Mohammad Al Gergawi; Dr. Anwar Mohammed Gargash; Abdulrahman Al Owais; Mohammed Ahmed Al Murr; Omar Al Futtaim.
The museum is set on Dubai Creek capturing Dubai’s spirit open to sea and sky while harmonising with surroundings. It represents more than an architectural landmark but also a cultural statement affirming Dubai's role in celebrating global talent.
