Dubai Municipality Steps Up Pest Control Efforts Following Adverse Weather

Dubai Municipality (DM) is stepping up its campaign against public health threats by launching comprehensive strategies aimed at controlling pests, particularly mosquitoes. The initiative encompasses a blend of chemical, physical, and biological methods to tackle the spread of these pests and eliminate their breeding grounds.

Adel Al Karrani, Director of the Public Health Services Department at Dubai Municipality, highlighted the relentless efforts of the Municipality's teams. These teams are working tirelessly to mitigate the mosquito problem across various locales in Dubai, including residential, commercial, and industrial areas, as well as water bodies, parks, markets, and drainage zones. The aim is to bolster the public health infrastructure, offer proactive protection to the community, and maintain a hygienic environment devoid of pests that transmit diseases.

"Following the rainstorm at the end of April, Dubai Municipality executed extensive disinfection and sterilization operations," Al Karrani stated. The operation targeted 102 water collection sites and over 75,000 drainage outlets to disrupt mosquito breeding cycles. The use of bacterial capsules for larval control, alongside spraying and fumigating adult mosquitoes, was a key component of this strategy. Additionally, the deployment of mosquito traps and the application of 511 liters of liquid pesticides along with 391 kilograms of solid pesticides were crucial steps taken.

Al Karrani emphasized the adoption of eco-friendly pesticides, applied following detailed action plans and control strategies to ensure the effective containment of mosquito proliferation.

Furthermore, Dubai Municipality has provided guidelines to approved and licensed contracting companies, detailing the pest control measures to be implemented. This includes regular field inspections at construction sites to further curb the spread of insects and mosquitoes. Collaborative strategies with other government entities have also been strengthened to enhance pest control efforts.

In an effort to educate the public on preventive measures, the Municipality utilized social media platforms to share tips. These include vigilant monitoring of water leaks from faucets, air conditioners, and refrigerators, and the elimination of stagnant water in swimming pools, plant containers, and barrels.
