'Zero Waste in Hatta' Campaign Gets Boost with Advanced Waste Management Project

Dubai Municipality has partnered with Imdaad to launch a sustainable waste management project in the Hatta region. The project, called "Outsourcing Waste Collection, Transportation, and Recycling Services", aims to enhance the municipality's operations while supporting the goals of the 'Zero Waste in Hatta' campaign. The primary objective is to divert various types of waste from landfills, promoting sustainable waste management in Hatta and fostering a sense of social responsibility for the environment among residents and visitors.

To achieve this, Dubai Municipality has transformed the Hatta landfill into an advanced facility that can transfer segregated waste to treatment sites in Dubai. The facility covers an area of 60,043 square meters and includes an administrative office and waste disposal zone. On average, Hatta generates 20 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily, which will now be diverted from landfills. The project also handles 27 tonnes of agricultural waste from the region each day, ensuring it is properly sent to the Warsan waste-to-energy plant.

A total of 1,147 residential units in Hatta are expected to benefit from the waste management project. To facilitate waste segregation, Dubai Municipality has distributed over 2,500 new waste storage and collection containers. These containers, differentiated by color, include green containers for recyclable waste and black containers for non-recyclable waste. Illustrations and instructions on the containers help raise public awareness about the importance of correct waste segregation at the source.

Dawoud Al Hajri, Director-General of Dubai Municipality, highlighted how the project aligns with the municipality's strategic objectives. These objectives include reducing waste generation, increasing recycling and processing rates, and transforming Hatta into a model city. The project is also in line with the circular economy concept and Dubai's Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2021-2041, which aims to promote best practices for recycling and waste management.

In addition to the waste management project, Dubai Municipality is modernizing public-facing government services and implementing environment-friendly community projects to enhance residents' quality of life and ensure their health and safety. The municipality has assigned an integrated field team, consisting of cleaners, supervisors, drivers, and vehicle operators, along with a fleet of vehicles and other systems, to collect, store, and transport waste from all over Hatta.Dubai Municipality and Imdaad have also conducted direct outreach programs involving over 900 families, educational institutions, and farms in Hatta. Imdaad has implemented the "My Environment" program to raise awareness among schoolchildren about recycling, waste segregation, and environmental protection. The company will also organize awareness visits for students at the Imdaad Farz factory in the Jebel Ali community.

This waste management project builds on Dubai Municipality's successful outsourcing strategy for waste collection, transport, and recycling services. Since 2012, the municipality has implemented the 'My City .. My Environment' project in 16 sub-regions of Dubai, benefiting over 18,000 residential units. The project has promoted better waste management through the addition of residential storage containers and the deployment of multi-utility machines and field workers. With the new project in Hatta, Dubai Municipality aims to further promote a sustainable society and reinforce its position as a global leader in sustainability and hygiene.
