Dubai Municipality Unveils Agricultural Beautification At Al Meydan, Al Khail Crossroads

Dubai Municipality has recently embarked on a significant project aimed at enhancing the city's green spaces, particularly at the intersection of Al Meydan and Al Khail Streets. This initiative, covering an expansive area of 302,266 square metres, is part of the municipality's broader strategy to beautify Dubai and increase its cultivated green areas. The project utilises advanced technologies for sustainable irrigation and water drainage systems, including fully automated irrigation and innovative wind-resistant spraying techniques, which have led to a 30% reduction in water usage.

Moreover, the implementation of sustainable groundwater and rainwater drainage systems has shown effectiveness, especially following recent rainfall events. The establishment of a pumping station with a capacity of over 280 cubic metres per hour and a tank capable of holding 1,000 cubic metres underscores the project's scale. Adding to the aesthetic enhancement, multi-coloured linear lighting systems have been installed at the intersection.

Dubai's New Green Space Initiative

Dawoud Al Hajri, Director-General of Dubai Municipality, underscored the importance of these agricultural beautification initiatives. He highlighted that increasing green spaces aligns with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's vision for Dubai to become the best city for living worldwide. Al Hajri pointed out that these efforts are crucial for promoting environmental sustainability and enhancing Dubai's attractiveness and living standards.

"Dubai Municipality prioritises the development of agricultural beautification projects with a primary goal of enhancing the ever-renewing vitality of Dubai according to integrated world-class standards," said Al Hajri. He also noted the municipality's commitment to sustainability through the use of innovative irrigation technologies that rely on fully recycled water.

The design of the intersection is inspired by horse hoof prints, resulting in a unique artwork that blends elements of wild nature with carefully selected ornamental plants. The landscape has been enriched with diverse evergreen tree species and features the inaugural planting of "Chorisia" trees in Dubai. These trees are known for their broad, swollen stems that act as water reservoirs and their large pink-red flowers.

The municipality's dedication to adhering to the highest global standards in agricultural beautification projects is evident in its innovative design elements and use of advanced irrigation techniques. In 2023, Dubai Municipality achieved a significant milestone by planting more than 185,000 trees under the Green Dubai initiative. This effort added an extra 234 hectares to Dubai's green area, highlighting the municipality's commitment to afforestation and improving green space per capita allocation.
