Dubai Unveils Ambitious Plan For 140 Metro Stations By 2040
Dubai has unveiled a plan to expand its Metro system, aiming to increase the number of stations from 64 to 140 by 2040. The initiative also seeks to develop areas surrounding Metro stations, interconnecting public transport modes and boosting sustainable transport efficiency.
By 2030, the plan is set to cover 96 stations across 140 sq km, with the ultimate goal of reaching 140 stations over 228 sq km by 2040.
Benefits for Developers
The development plan, approved during a meeting of the Executive Council of Dubai, offers incentives for developers to use land around Metro stations. This supports the '20-minute city' concept, aiming to provide additional services, increase Metro ridership, and enhance sustainability and quality of life in Dubai. The meeting was chaired by HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, First Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of the UAE, and Deputy Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai.
Key Goals
The strategic plan aims to achieve several objectives:
- Raise public transport usage to 45%.
- Reduce carbon emissions to 16 tonnes per capita.
- Improve public spaces by encouraging walking and increasing shaded areas.
- Increase populations around Metro stations.
- Enhance residential, commercial, office, and service spaces near Metro stations.
- Promote economic growth by attracting users and increasing economic activities.
This ambitious development plan demonstrates Dubai's dedication to improving public transport, sustainability, and community well-being while setting a forward-looking blueprint for the city's future expansion.
