'Metro Babies' Celebrate With RTA: Exclusive Scholarships Announced
In a city where innovation is as regular as the desert sun, Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority took an unprecedented step in celebration of its 15-year iconic Metro. It is not just another event of commemoration but this time with the main spotlight on a very special group of individuals affectionately dubbed the 'Metro Babies'.
Who they are: these are 'Metro Babies' who came into the world on September 9, 2009, the very day when Dubai Metro started service with driverless trains, changing the landscape of this city and setting new benchmarks for urban transportation. These are people that have shared a special bond with one of Dubai's biggest infrastructural accomplishments, and it seems the RTA has decided it is about time their connection is commemorminated-only if Dubai can pull off something this peculiar-and give them a ticket to a bright future, quite literally.

Announcing a scholarship scheme, in lieu of the Metro's 15th-anniversary celebrations, the RTA has announced a scholarship program exclusively for these Metro Babies. Eligible individuals would be those UAE Nationals born on that landmark day, and they must have maintained an excellent record, both in secondary and higher education. A very thoughtful gesture from the RTA in trying not only to celebrate the Metro's legacy but also invest in the next generation of Dubai's bright minds-those who quite literally were 'born to ride'.
But the festivities don't stop there. Not to stop there, the RTA is also hosting a grand celebration at Legoland Dubai on September 21, 2024, a move that's sure to make other cities green with envy. This is not an average solemnization but a reunion for all Metro Babies—those born from the time the 75-kilometer rail network was opened until 2018. Let that sink in for a while. Imagine the day when those young denizens of the emirate, who grew up hand in glove with the expansion of the system, gather to celebrate their unique linkage to the heartbeat of the city.
It's going to be much, much more than a fun-filled day. It's going to say "salute" to growth and progress, and to the beautiful journey these children and the Metro took together. The Metro grew: it expanded to new lines and new stations. Children of Dubai matured, learning how to live in a city with the rule of constant innovation.
The idea for the scholarships is not to show rearview vision on the part of the RTA but to look ahead: investing into Dubai's leaders of tomorrow by taking these Metro Babies along a journey smoothed, cushioned, and poised with endless possibilities.
As the Dubai Metro remains a symbol of this city's commitment to progress, these Metro Babies now carry a part of that legacy. And who knows? Maybe one day some of them will be at the helm, taking Dubai into its next great chapter.
For a city always in construction, it would only make sense that the babies born on the day one of the most futuristic of its many undertakings began would themselves start being given the tools with which to build their futures. Born to ride, after all, with a little help from the RTA, they're on track to soar.
