You Can Now Name Roads In Dubai. Here's How To Go About It And What To Keep In Mind

The Dubai Road Naming Committee, responsible for naming roads and streets in Dubai, has introduced the Street Designation Proposal platform under Dubai Municipality's supervision. This initiative allows public participation in suggesting names for roads and streets throughout Dubai.

The public can contribute by proposing names through the platform link: https://roadsnaming.ae. This initiative encourages community participation in preserving heritage while promoting modern development.

Dawoud Al Hajri, Director-General of Dubai Municipality and Chairman of the Dubai Road Naming Committee, highlighted that this platform is part of efforts to enhance community involvement in naming roads and streets across various areas of the Emirate. The platform aligns with the committee's goals to preserve historical legacy, promote civilisation, and reflect future development.

Community Engagement in Road Naming

The committee has developed a method for proposing names based on specific classifications. These include names linked to Arabic and Islamic design, art, culture, and Arabic poetic prosody. Additionally, it covers names related to natural phenomena, local plants, trees, flowers, marine and wild plants, birds, environmental sustainability, ships, marine tools, fishing, winds, and rain.

Al Hajri stated that "The new platform serves as a digital system, allowing the public to suggest names for streets and roads across Dubai. It aims to revive valuable historical meanings, heritage, and urban monuments in line with Dubai's leading global position." This approach ensures that the names reflect the emirate's history and cultural wealth while aligning with future development.

Specific Classifications for Naming

The classifications also include names of squares, forts, ancient castles, archaeological sites, local jewellery, horse and Arabian camel descriptions. Names inspired by types of palms and date palms are also considered. Additionally included are farming professions' names as well as those inspired by industrial professions and their tools. Names of gemstones and those related to modern technology inventions are also part of the classifications.

The committee has already completed naming roads in Al-Khawaneej 2 during its trial phase. Names inspired by local trees like Ghaf Street were used. Other street names include Sidr Street, Reehan Street, Faghi Street, Samer Street, and Shareesh Street.
