Dubai To Reduce Summer Working Hours, Suspend Friday Working For Public Sector

The Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR) has introduced the 'Our Flexible Summer' initiative, aiming to shorten working hours for participating government bodies during the summer months.

The initiative is set to run from August 12, 2024 until September 30, 2024. It aims to improve employee well-being by reducing working hours to seven per day and eliminating work on Fridays. This change is expected to foster a better work-life balance and enhance workplace safety during the hot summer period.

Dubai s New Summer Work Hours

DGHR's commitment is evident in its alignment with the 'Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033'. This strategy seeks to elevate residents' well-being and establish Dubai as a prime location for long-term living and employment.

Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al Falasi, Director-General of DGHR, stated, "We are thrilled to announce that DGHR will be launching the 'Our Flexible Summer' initiative, in line with our long-standing efforts to nurture a flexible work environment that promotes the work-life balance of government employees, in accordance with best international practices.

"The launch will also further our vision to empower human resources by developing smart solutions and innovative policies to uplift Dubai's competitiveness. The initiative aims to enhance employees' quality of life and promote sustainable use of government resources, positioning Dubai as the ideal city for a superior lifestyle."

Before launching the initiative, DGHR conducted a survey among various government entities. The survey aimed to gauge their willingness to adopt reduced working hours during summer. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, indicating strong support for measures that would improve employees' work-life balance.

To ensure effective implementation, DGHR will supply participating entities with necessary resources. These entities will provide feedback on how the initiative impacts employee productivity and overall well-being. Regular assessments of this feedback will help DGHR compile a final report summarising outcomes and recommendations.

A total of 15 government entities are involved in this pilot phase. Their participation aims to test the feasibility of reduced working hours while maintaining productivity. This trial period will help identify any adjustments needed before broader implementation.

The initiative also aims to encourage employees to engage in leisure activities post-work and reduce energy consumption within government offices. This dual focus on personal well-being and environmental sustainability highlights DGHR's holistic approach.

The 'Our Flexible Summer' initiative reflects DGHR's dedication to creating a supportive work environment. By adopting international best practices, it seeks not only to enhance employee satisfaction but also to boost Dubai's global competitiveness.

This effort underscores Dubai’s ambition under its wise leadership’s vision for a high-quality life for all residents. By fostering flexibility in the workplace, DGHR hopes to make significant strides towards achieving these long-term goals.
