Today, Dubai's gold market witnessed a significant turn as gold prices experienced their first notable decline in weeks. As of April 23, the price of gold plummeted by approximately $80, situating itself at $2,305 an ounce. This sudden decrease marks a departure from the consistent surge gold prices have enjoyed, previously reaching heights of $2,200, $2,300, and even $2,400 in rapid succession.
Despite the current price of $2,305 being on the higher side for consumers, the potential for continued price decreases brings a wave of optimism among shoppers and jewellery retailers in the UAE. Since the onset of 2024, gold prices have seen an unparalleled rush to new peaks, with the breach of the $2,400 mark signaling a possible continuation of this trend.
In the UAE, the gold rate had hovered around Dh268 per gram for 22K gold in the days leading up to this shift. This rate, considered exorbitant for many shoppers, had not deterred buying, particularly among tourists in the UAE, who find the price difference between the UAE and their home countries compelling enough to make purchases at any price level.
Reflecting the drop in international bullion prices, the UAE's gold rate adjusted to Dh258.5 for 22K gold, a decrease from Dh262.25, and significantly down from Dh268.25 on April 21.
