Dubai And Japan's New R&D Collaboration Aims To Pioneer In Cybernetic Avatar Technologies
Dubai Future Labs (DFL) and Osaka University, under the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), have entered into a partnership to advance research and development (R&D) in new technologies. This collaboration aligns with the "Dubai Research and Development Programme," which aims to bolster key economic sectors and foster growth by providing a robust framework for innovation across Dubai.
The partnership will focus on cybernetic avatars through three main projects. These include managing multiple Cybernetic Avatars (CAs) via a large language model (LLM), creating a robot avatar suitable for multicultural interactions, and conducting social acceptance studies on various CAs. The initiative aims to establish a world-class research lab named Cybernetic Avatar Alliance: Dubai Japan Laboratories for Cybernetic Avatar Technologies.

Khalifa Al Qama, Executive Director of DFL, stated, "We are committed to working with the world’s top researchers, experts and institutions to exchange knowledge and ideas to advance research and development in critical areas." This sentiment underscores the collaborative spirit driving this venture.
The joint efforts of DFL and JST will also enhance Dubai’s Research & Development Programme. This initiative supports key economic sectors by providing a comprehensive framework for innovation in priority areas such as Health and Wellbeing, Environmental Technologies, Smart Built Infrastructure, and Space. The collaboration is expected to create new opportunities for growth within these sectors.
Dr. Hashimoto Kazuhito, President of JST, remarked, "JST is one of the key organisations encouraging science, technology, and innovation in Japan. We believe it is extremely important to build an international network of multinational research partners, share information leading to the development of cutting-edge fields and technologies." His statement highlights the importance of global partnerships in advancing technological frontiers.
Moonshot Goal 1
The leadership teams from DFL and JST discussed potential joint projects related to the JST Moonshot Research and Development Programme. A special emphasis was placed on Moonshot Goal 1: Realisation of a society where humans can transcend limitations of body, brain, space, and time by 2050. This ambitious goal aims to leverage advanced technologies to overcome human constraints.
Dr. Kazuhito further added that conducting demonstration tests in Dubai is crucial for achieving the Moonshot Goal. He believes this will foster a new generation of innovators with a global perspective through cooperative activities. He expressed hope that this collaboration would lead to advancements in robotics, digital technologies, AI, including cybernetic avatars.
The agreement involves several esteemed institutions such as the University of Electro-Communications, RIKEN, Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International, and Cyber Agent Inc. These entities will work together under JST’s Moonshot Goal 1 initiative to push forward R&D activities.
This partnership between DFL and JST signifies a significant step towards realising innovative solutions that could transform various sectors globally. By pooling resources and expertise from both regions, they aim to unlock new potentials in technology development.
This collaboration not only aims at technological advancements but also at building strong international relationships that can drive future innovations. The combined efforts are expected to yield significant benefits for both Dubai and Japan while contributing positively to global technological progress.
The collaborative venture between Dubai Future Labs and Osaka University underlines their commitment to pioneering research that transcends traditional boundaries. By focusing on cybernetic avatars among other technologies, they aim to pave the way for future innovations that could redefine human capabilities.
This strategic alliance marks an important milestone in international cooperation for technological advancement. It reflects a shared vision for leveraging cutting-edge research to address global challenges effectively while fostering mutual growth through innovation-driven initiatives.
