RTA and Etihad Rail Forge New Path with MoU Signing at World Governments Summit

H H Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Finance, along with H H Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Etihad Rail, were present at the World Governments Summit to witness the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Etihad Rail. This MoU signifies the commencement of a collaborative effort aimed at integrating ticket booking and fare payment solutions through the RTA's nol system, in line with the UAE Digital Government Strategy 2025 and the Dubai Digital Strategy to foster digital transformation in Dubai.

Sheikh Maktoum emphasized that this MoU is a step forward in enhancing integration among federal and local entities, introducing advanced ticket reservation and payment systems for Etihad Rail's passengers throughout the UAE. This initiative is seen as a significant boost to the UAE's mass transportation sector and aligns with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's directives for improved coordination and development of unified digital platforms.

RTA, Etihad Rail Sign Key MoU

Sheikh Theyab highlighted the importance of this partnership between Etihad Rail and the RTA in unifying efforts and leveraging RTA's expertise in deploying smart technologies for operating passenger trains that are safe, reliable, and convenient. This collaboration is part of the national railway network's broader framework, playing a pivotal role in enhancing the UAE's transportation infrastructure and driving economic growth.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General of the RTA, stated that this MoU supports the integration of public transportation systems with Etihad Rail to provide seamless travel experiences for passengers across Dubai and other emirates by train. It aligns with the strategy to expand the use of the nol card across various services, products, and solutions from both government and private entities. The nol card is a versatile smart card used for paying transportation fares, parking fees, making purchases at attractions, and retail stores.

The RTA has recently embarked on a project to upgrade the nol card system by transitioning to digital payment technologies known as Account Based Ticketing. This project aims to introduce a digital payment system using central transportation tariff wallet technology to enhance payment system technologies, operational enhancements, and tailor services to meet individual customer needs. Since its inception in 2009, the nol card has played a crucial role in facilitating public transportation users' movement and streamlining public parking fee payments in Dubai.

The signing of this MoU between the RTA and Etihad Rail marks an important milestone in developing ticket booking and fare payment solutions. This initiative not only aligns with digital transformation strategies but also aims to enhance integration and collaboration among various transportation modes in Dubai. The nol card is instrumental in providing seamless travel experiences and expanding its use across different services and attractions. The upgrade to digital payment technologies is expected to further advance payment system technologies and cater to individual customer needs.
