Dubai's Energy Demand Records 5.4% Growth In 2024 Amid Economic Expansion
In 2024, Dubai witnessed a significant growth in energy consumption, with a 5.4 percent increase over the previous year. The total energy demand surged to 59,594 gigawatt hours (GWh), up from 56,516 GWh in 2023.
This upswing in energy needs is attributed to the rapid expansion of Dubai's economic activities and its growing population. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), highlighted these figures, underscoring the city's ongoing efforts to enhance its electricity and water infrastructure to meet the escalating demand.
Under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, the city has established itself as a dynamic global hub for living, working, business, and tourism. Al Tayer emphasised that Dubai's ascent as a global city directly contributes to the sustainable growth of DEWA, spurred by the increasing requirements for power and water. This development is in line with Dubai's strategic plans for urban, economic, and demographic progress.
In response to the burgeoning demand, DEWA has been diligently working to augment the capacity of its transmission and distribution networks. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to develop top-tier electricity and water infrastructure, ensuring that the utility provider keeps pace with Dubai's rapid urbanisation and economic development. Such advancements are pivotal in supporting the city's ambitions to cater to its residents and the expanding scope of its economic activities.
DEWA's commitment to sustainability and clean energy is evident in its current power generation capacity, which stands at 17.179 GW, with clean energy sources contributing 20 percent to this total. This aligns with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, both aimed at transitioning to 100 percent clean energy production by 2050. These strategies underscore Dubai's dedication to environmental sustainability and its ambitious goals for a cleaner, greener future.
Moreover, DEWA recorded a 3.4% rise in its peak demand for 2024, reaching 10.76 GW, compared to the previous year. This increase further illustrates the growing energy requirements of Dubai as it continues to flourish as a bustling metropolis. The data reflects the city's dynamic growth trajectory and DEWA's proactive measures to ensure a reliable and sustainable energy supply to meet the evolving needs of its population and economy.
