Dubai Duty Free Achieves Milestone As First Autism Certified Airport Retailer Globally

Dubai Duty Free has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first airport retailer globally to be recognised as a Certified Autism Center™ (CAC). This certification, awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), highlights the retailer's dedication to creating an inclusive shopping environment for autistic and sensory-sensitive individuals. This achievement is part of a larger initiative that has also seen Dubai become a Certified Autism Destination.

In an impressive effort, over 4,800 employees at Dubai Duty Free have completed training to assist customers on the autism spectrum. This training spanned various airport concourses, terminals, and back-office locations. The programme was completed with a remarkable 98.76 percent success rate within just 26 days, showcasing the organisation's commitment to inclusivity.

Dubai Duty Free Becomes Autism Certified Retailer

Ramesh Cidambi, Managing Director of Dubai Duty Free, expressed pride in receiving this certification. "It is an honour to receive this certification from IBCCES. This milestone is a testament of our commitment to delivering inclusive service to our diverse customer base. It aligns with Dubai Duty Free’s broader efforts to enhance accessibility and inclusivity across our operations. This achievement reinforces the organisations belief that travel should be a safe and welcoming experiences for everyone."

The certification involves implementing autism-friendly practices throughout Dubai Duty Free's retail spaces. These practices are designed to support passengers and customers with autism and other hidden disabilities. The initiative focuses on empathy, respect, and flexibility for those with sensory sensitivities or developmental differences.

This accomplishment follows similar recognitions received by Dubai Airports and Emirates Airlines, which were the first airport and airline respectively to earn this distinction. The adoption of these practices underscores Dubai's commitment to being an inclusive destination for all travellers.

Symbol of Support

As part of its efforts, Dubai Duty Free has adopted the internationally recognised ‘sunflower symbol’. This symbol helps identify individuals with hidden disabilities, ensuring they receive appropriate support while shopping or travelling through the airport.

This initiative not only enhances customer experience but also sets a precedent for other retailers worldwide aiming to create more inclusive environments. By adopting global best practices, Dubai Duty Free is leading by example in promoting accessibility and inclusivity in retail operations.
