Dubai Diamond Week Launches With Focus On Industry Challenges And Future Strategies

The Dubai Diamond Week commenced with the Dubai Diamond Conference (DDC), organised by DMCC. The event focused on critical challenges in the diamond sector, such as global price declines, reduced demand, and competition from synthetic diamonds. It also addressed changing consumer tastes. The conference theme was "Thriving Under Pressure – navigating new global paradigms," bringing together various stakeholders to discuss collaborative strategies.

Dubai has emerged as the leading diamond trading hub globally, with nearly 120 million carats traded in the first half of 2024. This reflects significant growth compared to the previous year. Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman and CEO of DMCC and Chairman of the Dubai Diamond Exchange, highlighted Dubai’s pivotal role in fostering industry collaboration. He stated, "As the global diamond hub, Dubai is uniquely positioned to unite stakeholders and drive meaningful discussions for the sector’s sustainable growth."

Cook also acknowledged Ahmed Bin Sulayem’s contributions to enhancing transparency within the Kimberley Process. These efforts are vital for maintaining ethical practices in diamond trading.

The conference included panels that tackled pressing market issues like geopolitical tensions and economic slowdown in China. Experts explored strategies from other sectors and tech-driven solutions to address these challenges. They also emphasised incorporating ESG principles into business practices to ensure sustainable growth.

Sponsors such as Stargems, Choron, and Catoca supported the Dubai Diamond Conference. Following this event will be JGT Dubai and the 2024 Kimberley Process Plenary Session. During this session, DMCC’s CEO will present UAE’s achievements during its "Year of Delivery," highlighting milestones reached in enhancing industry standards.

The discussions at the conference aimed to create a roadmap for overcoming current obstacles in the diamond industry. By uniting various stakeholders under one roof, it sought to foster collaboration that would lead to long-term solutions beneficial for all parties involved.
