Sheikha Latifa Spearheads Meeting On Dubai's Premier Art Initiative

H.H. Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Chairperson of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), and a prominent member of the Dubai Council, recently presided over the second meeting of the Steering Committee for the 'Dubai Collection’ initiative. This initiative, a collaborative effort between Dubai Culture and the Art Dubai Group, was launched under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. It marks Dubai's first institutional collection of modern and contemporary art, aiming to offer an innovative approach to art collection beyond traditional acquisition and museum-building practices.

The Dubai Collection introduces a novel loan system where patrons and corporate collections can contribute artworks while retaining legal ownership. This system facilitates public access to significant artworks through both an online digital museum and physical exhibitions. The initiative's success was highlighted during its presentation at the 17th edition of Art Dubai, the leading international art fair in the MENASA region, which took place from 28th February to 3rd March at Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai.

Dubai Art Initiative s Strategic Meeting

Under Sheikha Latifa's leadership, the Dubai Collection has amassed a remarkable array of 890 artworks from 77 patrons, with 80 percent of these works located in Dubai. The collection spans from 1920 to 2023 and includes pieces from 17 Emirati artists as well as artists from over 46 countries, reflecting its global appeal and cultural diversity. The initiative aims to expand its collection to 2,000 artworks and collaborate with 160 patrons by 2025, further establishing its role as a pioneering institutional collection and a key player in Dubai’s creative economy.

Sheikha Latifa commended the steering committee's dedication and hard work, acknowledging their crucial contribution to achieving the initiative's objectives. She emphasized the importance of community engagement in enriching Dubai’s cultural landscape and highlighted His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s generous donation of his artworks as a catalyst for further community involvement. The goal is to set a global benchmark for establishing a prestigious institutional art collection that reinforces Dubai's position as a leading cultural and creative hub.

Spotlight on Emirati Artists

During her visit to 'Encounters,’ an exhibition presented by the Dubai Collection at Art Dubai, Sheikha Latifa explored works from a curated selection of Emirati artists across various generations. The exhibition featured notable artists such as the late Hassan Sharif, Mohammed Kazem, Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim, Abdulqader Al Rais, Shaikha Al Mazrou, Afra Al Dhaheri, Maitha Abdullah, Hashel Al Lamki, and Sara Almheiri. This showcase not only highlights the growing community of art collectors in the UAE but also underscores the Dubai Collection’s commitment to fostering critical artistic studies and intellectual discourse through commissioned research material published online.

The Dubai Collection initiative stands as a testament to Dubai's dynamic approach towards cultivating a vibrant cultural ecosystem. By enabling public access to significant artworks and supporting intellectual discourse within the arts community, it contributes significantly to the emirate's creative landscape.
