Eid Al Fitr In UAE: 7 Places Dubai Residents Can Watch Cannon Firing
Dubai Police have announced that the Eid Al Fitr festival, marking the culmination of the fasting month of Ramadan, will be celebrated with the firing of cannons at seven locations across Dubai. This traditional event is a significant highlight in the city's festive calendar, symbolizing the joy and communal spirit of Eid.
Celebration Across Seven Locations In Dubai
Residents and visitors in Dubai will witness this ceremonial practice next to the Grand Zabeel Mosque and at Eid prayer grounds in Nad Al Shiba, Nadd Al Hamar, Baraha, Al Barsha, Umm Suqeim, and Hatta. The firing of cannons, a practice deeply rooted in local tradition, will occur when the crescent moon is sighted, heralding the start of Eid Al Fitr. Specifically, on the day of Eid, two shots will be fired: the first to announce the sighting of the moon and the second at the start of the Eid prayer, which is scheduled shortly after sunrise, at approximately 6.18am, subject to the moon's sighting.
Preparations Complete
Major General Abdullah Ali Al Ghaithi, the Assistant Commander-in-Chief of Operations, confirmed that all preparations for this event have been finalised. Furthermore, Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Tarish Al Amimi, who leads the Al Midfa (cannon) team, mentioned that a dedicated crew would manage each of the seven designated firing sites, ensuring the smooth execution of this tradition.
A Revival of Local Traditions
The firing of cannons is not only a practice reserved for Eid but also occurs daily during Ramadan at sunset to mark iftar, the breaking of the fast. Maj Gen Al Ghaithi highlighted that this tradition serves as a revival of local customs, where before the advent of watches and timetables, the cannons signaled the end of the day's fast and the beginning of Eid celebrations. This tradition underscores Dubai's commitment to preserving its cultural heritage while embracing the festive spirit of Eid alongside other global cities.
In essence, the firing of cannons in Dubai during the Eid Al Fitr festival is a vibrant reflection of the city's rich cultural traditions, bringing together communities in a shared celebration of joy and togetherness. As preparations are now complete, residents and visitors alike are poised to experience a truly memorable Eid in Dubai.
