Art Dubai 2024 Unveils Global South's Finest In Contemporary And Digital Art

Art Dubai, the Middle East's leading event for modern and contemporary art from the Global South, commenced its 17th edition on Wednesday at Madinat Jumeirah, with public access starting from 1st March. This year, the fair showcases over 120 gallery presentations spanning contemporary, modern, and digital art, with more than 65% of these originating from the Global South. Among the highlighted exhibitors is London's Grosvenor Gallery, which will present works by three Pakistani artists—Rasheed Araeen, Zarah Hussain, and Mohammad Ali Talpur—alongside modernist pieces by Sayed Haider Raza and Syed Sadequain.

Benedetta Ghione, Executive Director of Art Dubai, emphasized the fair's role in Dubai's evolving cultural narrative. She highlighted how Art Dubai is contributing to the growth of a creative economy through its unique model that fosters partnerships and collaboration. Pablo del Val, Artistic Director of Art Dubai, also remarked on the fair's institutional role within the region's cultural ecosystem and its commitment to being more than just a commercial platform.

Art Dubai 2024: Global South Art Showcase

The fair is organized into four main sections: Contemporary, Modern, Bawwaba, and Digital gallery sections. Each category offers a unique perspective on the art world, including annual artist commissions and a multidisciplinary thought leadership programme. The 2024 programme features notable events such as the 17th edition of Art Dubai’s Global Art Forum, which will delve into the nexus between extreme weather and change. Additionally, the second edition of the Art Business Conference Dubai will address key issues facing the global art market. This year also marks the debut of the Digital Summit at Art Dubai, aiming to explore the burgeoning digital art economy in Dubai.

Art Dubai's emphasis on artists and galleries from the Global South underscores its commitment to showcasing diverse voices and perspectives within the global art scene. The inclusion of Pakistani artists Rasheed Araeen, Zarah Hussain, and Mohammad Ali Talpur by Grosvenor Gallery highlights this dedication. Their works, alongside those of Sayed Haider Raza and Syed Sadequain, offer visitors a glimpse into South Asian modernism and contemporary art practices.

Through its innovative approach to fostering partnerships and collaborations, Art Dubai plays a pivotal role in supporting the creative economy not just in Dubai but globally. Benedetta Ghione's comments at the press conference reflect this mission, emphasizing how Art Dubai is actively contributing to Dubai's cultural growth and maturity.

A Cultural Meeting Point

Pablo del Val's remarks highlight Art Dubai's position as a cultural hub that brings together creative communities from around the world. The fair's diverse program—from contemporary galleries to digital art innovations—demonstrates its broad appeal and institutional significance in promoting cultural exchange and understanding.

The introduction of new initiatives like the Digital Summit at Art Dubai indicates the fair's forward-thinking approach to embracing digital art forms and economies. Alongside established events like the Global Art Forum and Art Business Conference Dubai, these additions ensure that Art Dubai remains at the forefront of discussions on art, technology, and culture.

In summary, Art Dubai's 17th edition not only showcases a wide range of artistic talent from across the Global South but also reinforces its role as a key player in supporting cultural growth and innovation.
