Sheikh Mohammed Approves AED 128 Billion Mega Terminal At Al Maktoum International
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, has officially approved the designs for a new passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport. This development is set to position the airport as the largest globally, with a projected annual capacity to handle 260 million passengers. The ambitious project, valued at AED128 billion, marks a significant milestone in Dubai's aviation strategy. Accompanied by high-ranking officials such as Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Sheikh Mohammed's visit to the Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects underscored the strategic importance of this initiative.
During his visit, Sheikh Mohammed highlighted that the new terminal would be quintuple the size of Dubai International Airport, which it is slated to eventually replace. The facility is designed to include 400 aircraft gates and five parallel runways, incorporating the latest in aviation technology. Furthermore, Sheikh Mohammed pointed out the broader impact of the airport's development, which will catalyze the emergence of a new city in Dubai South. This urban development is expected to meet the housing needs of a million people and attract key players in logistics and air transport.
The vision behind this colossal project extends beyond immediate aviation needs, aiming to secure continuous development for future generations and affirm Dubai's status as a global hub for aviation, logistics, and urban development. The master plan for what is dubbed the Airport of the Future covers an area of 70 square kilometers and includes a capacity exceeding 260 million passengers alongside 12 million tonnes of cargo annually.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Aviation City Corporation and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, announced that construction at Jebel Ali has already begun. The first phase is anticipated to conclude within a decade, supporting up to 150 million passengers. This project is expected to bolster Dubai's aviation sector for the next 40 years, featuring advanced technologies, modern facilities, and sustainable design elements aimed at achieving LEED Gold Certification.
The economic implications of this development are vast, promising to generate employment and meet residential needs for over a million individuals. Suzanne Al Anani, CEO of Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects, emphasized the project's innovative approach. It aims to redefine the passenger experience through enhanced connectivity, accessibility, and a commitment to sustainability.
