Dubai Airports Returns To Normalcy After Battling UAE's Heaviest Rainfall In Decades

Following an unprecedented downpour, the heaviest in 75 years, Dubai International Airport (DXB) has swiftly moved to restore and normalize its operations. Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, announced that the airport had resumed its standard flight schedule, managing around 1,400 flight movements daily, ahead of its anticipated recovery timeline. This rapid return to normalcy comes after the airport and its surroundings were severely impacted by flooding, leading to significant operational disruptions.

Griffiths highlighted the comprehensive efforts undertaken to clear the roads around the airport of water accumulation, ensuring that manpower, logistics, and facilities could function normally once more. The restoration of operations at DXB is a testament to the concerted efforts of various stakeholders, including airline partners and service providers. The collaboration was crucial in reworking schedules, augmenting manpower, and addressing the needs of disrupted passengers. In total, 2,155 flights were canceled, and 115 were diverted during this period.

DXB Resumes After Historic Rainfall

The CEO also commended the dedication of Dubai Airports employees and partners for their relentless work during this challenging time. Their efforts ensured that operations continued and passengers received necessary assistance. Additionally, 31 flights were redirected to Dubai World Central (DWC), and by the 19th of April, all affected guests had been adequately supported to proceed with their travel plans.

Ensuring guest welfare remained a priority throughout this period of disruption. Despite initial challenges in transporting supplies due to road closures around DXB and DWC, over 75,000 food packs were successfully delivered across both airports. Griffiths acknowledged ongoing challenges, such as processing the backlog of baggage but reassured that efforts were ongoing to resolve these issues promptly.

Griffiths expressed his sorrow over the impact of the heavy rainfall on communities and businesses across the UAE. He assured that Dubai Airports was committed to supporting its employees affected by the adverse weather conditions and would continue offering support wherever possible.

As operations at DXB return to normal, Griffiths advised guests to arrive at their terminal only three hours before their flight departure time. This recommendation aims to prevent unnecessary congestion and ensure smoother operations at the airport.
