Dubai Airports Expands Autism-Inclusive Training For 45,000 Employees To Support Neurodiverse Travellers
Dubai Airports has broadened its autism-inclusive training programme, aiming to better support autistic and sensory-sensitive travellers at Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International (DWC). This initiative involves 45,000 employees from the wider airport community, including partners and stakeholders. The effort aligns with Dubai's goal of becoming a Certified Autism Destination (CAD).
The training programme is part of a larger strategy by Dubai Airports to ensure a supportive experience for guests with specific needs. DXB holds the distinction of being the first international airport globally to receive the Certified Autism Centre (CAC) designation from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). It is also certified by the Dubai Autism Centre (DAC).

Majed Al Joker, Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Airports, emphasised the importance of inclusion. He stated, "True inclusion starts with people. By investing and increasing specialist training by 36 percent year-on-year, we are embedding a culture of understanding and proactive support across our airports." He highlighted that DXB and DWC serve as gateways to Dubai, shaping impressions for millions.
The comprehensive training accredited by IBCCES has been implemented across both airports. Frontline teams from various partners like Dubai Police, General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs, Dubai Customs, dnata, Emirates, flydubai, and others have integrated this training into their operations. This ensures a consistent environment throughout the travel experience.
Employees are trained in sensory awareness, effective communication, and anxiety-reduction techniques to better assist neurodiverse individuals. Guest Experience Ambassadors at Dubai Airports wear Sunflower pins for easy identification. They are stationed at key points in DXB and DWC to offer specialised assistance to autistic guests and their families.
During Autism Acceptance Month, DXB's Smart Gates are lit in blue to show solidarity with the autism community. Sunflowers, an international symbol for hidden disabilities, are displayed across DXB terminals to raise awareness.
Enhanced Accessibility Features
Dubai Airport offers several services like the DXB Travel Planner—an online visual guide for journey preparation—and the Sunflower Lanyard. This discreet identifier provides access to priority lanes and an autism-friendly route through check-in, passport control, security checkpoints, and boarding.
Additional offerings include complimentary two-hour parking, dedicated taxis, wheelchair services, and the Assisted Travel Lounge in Terminal 2—a quiet space designed for sensory-friendly experiences. These features underscore DXB's commitment to making travel accessible for everyone.
