Drydocks World Invites Public To Name Middle East’s Largest Floating Crane In Unique Competition
Drydocks World, a key player in Dubai's maritime industry and part of DP World, has initiated a competition to name its latest engineering marvel—a 5,000-tonne floating crane. This crane, the largest in the Middle East and Africa, highlights the company's dedication to maritime innovation and excellence.
The Floating Sheerleg Crane is being built by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. (ZPMC) and will arrive in Dubai by summer 2026. The naming process must be completed soon so that the chosen name can be engraved during its fabrication, becoming an integral part of its identity.

Drydocks World invites residents from all walks of life—engineers, students, poets, and business leaders—to propose a name for this massive machine. The name should reflect its purpose and significance while resonating with Dubai's values and future vision.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, expressed that the crane is more than just machinery; it embodies Dubai’s ambition and engineering prowess. He stated, "We are building something extraordinary. Now we invite the people of Dubai to help give it a name that reflects our shared values, heritage, and vision for the future."
Symbol of Innovation
Captain Rado Antolovic, PhD, CEO of Drydocks World, emphasized the crane's importance: "For over 40 years, Drydocks World has supported the UAE’s rise as a global maritime hub. This new crane represents the next leap forward in scale, capability, and innovation."
The crane can lift up to 5,000 tonnes to a height of 120 metres above water. Its lifting capacity is equivalent to hoisting 400 double-decker buses or twenty-five wide-body aircraft. When fully extended at 180 metres, it matches the rooftop height of Burj Al Arab.
