DP World Boosts European Trade With Major €130 Million Investment In Romania
DP World has inaugurated three significant new sites in Romania, enhancing the nation's status as a key European trade hub and driving regional economic growth. Constanta, the largest container port on the Black Sea, now hosts two new facilities following a €65 million investment: a 5-hectare terminal for heavy and complex cargo, and a roll-on, roll-off (RO-RO) terminal capable of handling up to 80,000 vehicles annually at its peak.
A further €50 million will be invested in a new multi-transport platform in Constanta, set to open in 2025. Additionally, DP World has launched an 8-hectare intermodal logistics hub in Aiud, located in Romania's industrial heartland, following a €21 million investment. This facility connects rail and road networks, enhancing the movement of goods between mainland Europe and the Black, North, and Adriatic Seas.

Since 2004, DP World has invested over €250 million in Romania, including grants from the European Union. These latest infrastructure projects coincide with DP World's 20th anniversary of its investment in Romania, the first European country where it expanded.
Rashid Abdulla, CEO and Managing Director of DP World Europe, highlighted Romania's dynamic economy and its strategic position to benefit from nearshoring and manufacturing trends. "DP World looks forward to building on our long-standing relationship with Romania and deploying our latest investments to support Romania as it plays an increasingly important role in trade and economic growth in the region," Abdulla stated.
Cosmin Carstea, CEO of DP World Romania, noted that the new investments would increase cargo flows by around two million tonnes per annum through the country. "We believe that with this investment, DP World in Constanta will significantly strengthen its position as one of the most important container and RO-RO hubs in Central and Eastern Europe," Carstea added. He also mentioned plans to open a centre of excellence for services in the Balkans to facilitate trade for neighbouring countries.
Sorin Grindeanu, Minister of Transportation of Romania, expressed the government's support for DP World's latest investments. "The Romanian government welcomes DP World’s latest investment in Romania’s logistics infrastructure. DP World has been a strong partner to Romania for twenty years. Constanta port has opened Romania to new markets and trading opportunities, provided stable and skilled jobs, and catalysed the development of adjacent businesses," Grindeanu said.
Future Prospects
The new facilities are expected to improve connectivity between DP World's existing sea, rail, barge, and truck services across Romania. This will enhance the movement of goods between mainland Europe and various seas surrounding the continent. The ongoing investments underscore DP World's commitment to bolstering Romania's logistics infrastructure and supporting its role in regional trade.
As these projects come online, they are poised to further integrate Romania into the European trade network, offering new opportunities for economic development and job creation. The strategic location of these facilities will likely attract more businesses to utilise Romania as a critical transit point for goods moving across Europe.
