DP World And Deendayal Port Authority Partner With Nevomo To Explore Autonomous Rail Freight Movement In India

DP World, the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), and Nevomo have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore using Nevomo’s MagRail technology. This initiative aims to enhance the movement of rail-based cargo within existing port systems. The collaboration seeks to revolutionise freight transport in India by introducing advanced technology for efficient cargo handling.

The MoU outlines a 750-metre pilot project at Deendayal Port, showcasing MagRail's potential. This first-of-its-kind project in India will demonstrate self-propelled freight movement within an operational port setting. The goal is to implement MagRail solutions that use linear motor technology for autonomous, electric-powered wagons on existing tracks, boosting capacity and efficiency while cutting costs and emissions.

Exploring Autonomous Rail Freight in India

The signing took place on 15th July 2025 in Kandla, Gujarat. Shri Sushil Kumar Singh, IRSME, Chairman of DPA; Rizwan Soomar, CEO & Managing Director at DP World; and Przemek (Ben) Paczek, CEO of Nevomo Group BV were present. This collaboration aligns with India's National Logistics Policy and PM Gati Shakti agenda, focusing on modernising logistics infrastructure.

Shri Sushil Kumar Singh highlighted the strategic importance of this collaboration for port infrastructure. "This collaboration is a strategic advancement in port infrastructure, enhancing capacity and operational efficiency to support growing cargo demands," he stated. DP World plays a crucial role in this initiative, aligning with India's logistics framework goals.

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem of DP World emphasised their commitment to innovation: "At DP World, we are committed to future-proofing our terminals by adopting innovative technologies that redefine how cargo moves through the supply chain." He noted that piloting MagRail solutions aligns with their focus on speed, efficiency, and sustainability.

Collaborative Efforts for Future Growth

Rizwan Soomar from DP World expressed the importance of collaboration: "We believe transformative infrastructure is driven by collaboration and long-term thinking." The partnership with DPA and Nevomo offers a chance to rethink freight movement in India. Their commitment extends beyond individual projects to support India's ambition for integrated port-led logistics ecosystems.

Przemek (Ben) Paczek from Nevomo shared his enthusiasm: "We are proud to partner in this innovative initiative at Deendayal Port to showcase MagRail’s real-world potential in enhancing freight efficiency." Collaborating with organisations like DP World and DPA marks a significant step towards sustainable logistics advancement in India.

This partnership aims to automate short-haul cargo transfers at Deendayal Port, reducing diesel vehicle reliance and improving yard efficiency. The pilot project sets new standards for efficiency and sustainability, demonstrating how innovation can transform ports into economic growth engines.
