DoE Youth Programme Engages UAE Youth To Address Water Scarcity And Sustainability Challenges

The Department of Energy - Abu Dhabi (DoE) recently organised a Youth Programme during the International Desalination and Water Reuse World Congress (IDRA World Congress 2024). This initiative brought together industry experts and academics to engage young people from the UAE and beyond in discussions, workshops, and idea-sharing sessions. The focus was on global water scarcity, sustainable practices, technological innovation, energy integration, water stewardship, and international cooperation.

Awaidha Murshed Al Marar, Chairman of DoE, stressed the importance of involving youth in these discussions. He stated, "Today’s youth are the future architects of innovative solutions that will safeguard water resources for generations to come. The Youth Programme, as part of the ongoing IDRA World Congress, embodies our commitment to preparing young minds to take on these responsibilities by involving them in a multi-global event that bridges knowledge with action."

Empowering Emirati Youth for Sustainable Solutions

The programme featured 'The Abu Dhabi Water Drop Story,' where Al Marar discussed the evolution of water management in Abu Dhabi. It also included the ‘Youth Ideation Workshop: Hydro and Solar Tech Synergy,’ led by Malake Halabi from Masdar. This workshop explored sustainable innovation in water production. Additionally, Ayesha Abdulrahman Al Ali from DoE led a session on leadership in energy innovation.

Shannon McCarthy, Secretary-General of IDRA, highlighted the urgency of addressing global water scarcity. She remarked, "As global water scarcity intensifies, it is imperative that we encourage our future leaders to strive for sustainable solutions. The Youth Programme at this year’s Congress is designed to cultivate fresh perspectives and cross-border collaborations, empowering young leaders to drive meaningful, lasting change in their communities and beyond."

The Youth Programme is an integral part of the Congress's broader agenda focusing on water, energy, and food security intersections. It aims to nurture informed young leaders who can advocate for policies supporting sustainable water use both locally and globally. Hamad Naji Aldhaheri from the DoE Youth Council noted that this programme offers invaluable experience on a global platform.

The IDRA World Congress 2024 also features the IDRA Young Leader Programme for professionals under 35. This initiative provides mentorships, scholarships, and fellowships to foster new leaders in the water sector. It offers opportunities for them to innovate and excel in their careers.

By hosting the IDRA World Congress 2024, Abu Dhabi demonstrates its strategic commitment to sustainable water management. This event empowers young leaders to address one of the world's most urgent environmental challenges: water scarcity.
