DoE, MBZWI, And IDRA Advocate For Innovative Water Solutions At COP29 In Baku
The Department of Energy – Abu Dhabi (DoE), the Mohamed Bin Zayed Water Initiative (MBZWI), and the International Desalination and Reuse Association (IDRA) have emphasised the importance of innovative water solutions. At COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, these organisations highlighted their commitment to addressing water challenges through collaboration.
During a panel discussion titled "Water and Climate Change: Integrating Desalination, Reuse, Renewable Energy, and Stewardship for Sustainable Water Solutions," they explored strategies to tackle water shortages worsened by climate change. The focus was on integrating advanced technologies with collaborative efforts.

Ahmed Al Rumaithi, Undersecretary of DoE, stated, "Addressing global water challenges demands a strategic approach that combines advanced technologies with strong collaboration between governments, industry leaders, and financial institutions. Abu Dhabi is leading by example, driving innovation in desalination, water reuse, and energy-efficient water management."
Ayesha Al Ateeqi from MBZWI stressed the urgency of addressing water scarcity. She remarked that while progress is being made, complacency is not an option. The initiative is committed to supporting breakthrough technologies and raising awareness about global water scarcity.
Al Ateeqi further explained that collaboration among industry players, public sectors, academia, and innovators is vital. This cooperation aims to make water more accessible, affordable, and sustainable worldwide. The initiative focuses on developing new technologies to address these challenges effectively.
Shannon K. McCarthy from IDRA highlighted the dual impact of climate change on water scarcity and flooding. She noted that technical innovations like desalination and water reuse are crucial for adapting to these changes.
Holistic Water Management Strategies
McCarthy emphasised the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle various water issues. This includes conservation efforts, clean production methods, industrial stewardship, protection of natural resources, circular systems, and decarbonising treatment technologies using renewable energy.
The collective efforts of DoE, MBZWI, and IDRA at COP29 underscore their dedication to finding sustainable solutions for global water challenges. By integrating technology with collaborative strategies, they aim to mitigate the impacts of climate change on water resources effectively.
